I'm going to be looking at a '73 CJ5, owner says CJ5 needs steering box, Help

Hi everybody

After browsing Craigslist for quite some time, I found a 1973 CJ5 with a 304 V8, and it's stick shift. I plan on beating it up in the trails, since it's not exactly brand new.

The owner says the steering box is bad, it's 'sketchy on pavement, fine on dirt'. How expensive is it to have that replaced/repaired? Can someone with almost mechanical experience swap it out?

What else should I inspect when I go see the CJ5?

1972-1979 Jeep CJ5 Steering Gear - Steering - A1 Cardone 72-79 CJ5 Steering Gear - 15683-09003166 - PartsGeek

3 to 4 bolts to the frame and then connect the box to the shaft, etc.......not too bad.

Look for rust on the frame(I think at the leaf spring mounts is typical) and the body...................The rest is the same as any used car purchase.

I had the steering box replaced on a 2000 TJ I use to own. Had a tire dealer do it (Big O Tires) and it seems like it was pretty easy and cheap. $250 or there about. Nothing major but can't speak for a CJ5 either.

Just changed mine out, You tube said 1 hour and three bolts, it took me longer but had four bolts and the "inverted" torq's bolt". Bought an O'Reilly's gear box $120. 45 min to re-install.
