rear end question

Got a question for you cj guys....
1983 scrambler Stock 20 rear end

The rear end is not pulling. The drive shaft is turning but not the wheels.

It dose not sound like the ring and pinion are busted so my question is, are the splines on the two piece axel setup in twentys a common place for breakage? I can turn the drive shaft by hand and its snug and feels like it will almost try to pull the tires then just spins. I have not pulled the cover so I dont have any idea whats going on inside yet just trying to get some ideas before I pull it down.

Thanks Chris

Well my first guess would be spider gears, but if it is a amc 20 than it could be a broke axel, if it is a open diff than one broke axel will drop all drive to the rear, if it is a clean break than it wont make any sound. if it is a limited slip than if the clutches go south than it will quit pulling but normaly on just one side. so i still feel it is a sheared axel or blown spider gears. the other thing it could be is the key way is sheared but than it would not be able to spin the pinion by hand with the wheels on the ground.

1st, check the outer 2pc axle shafts see if the nut is tight, check for wear etc. If that looks good, then remove the diff cover and see how the inside looks.

Plan on getting a One piece axle upgrade. Sounds like you need to tear down the axle to find the problem, it's just as easy to replace the old shafts with new stronger ones. The labor is about the same.

OK i pulled the hub did it did not have any splines left on the inboard side. Shoud I go ahead and pull the axel out and check it or is this a common failure point?

Being a eighty three scrambler should it have wide trak axels? if I get one piece axels what length would I need? Wide vs narrow trac????

An 83 CJ should have wide track axles.

Thanks for the reply, So what is the inside of the hub supposed to look like? Is it supposed to have slpines in it that mesh with the splines on the end of the shaft cause this one is smooth. I guess I could take the good side apart and see what it looks like.

If i can remember some 20 yrs. ago my cj's axles at hub side was tapered with a keyway and bolt with cotter pin.Key would break in keyway.I don't think axle had splines toward hub.The keyway and the taper of axle when nut was tightened stopped all slipping. One fix i boogered it welded the nut to hub to axle.FRIGG IT the parts were junk anyway.

A keyway???? Thats what I dont see. I see what looked to be a piece of a keyway. I need to clean it up and see if I can see it.

Yea thats it.

I think I am gona weld me a few small beads on the taper, pull it up with the nut and weld the nut to the hub. I am just begining to work on it and I think it will hold together while I move it around the yard and until I can get a one piece kit. Thanks for the link.

Yea I welded it up. And it didnt work. When all was welded up the weak spot was the hole for the cotter pin on the end of the shaft, it snaped there after about fifty feet. I had already ordered a one piece kit for it when i welded it so it should be here anyday now.
