Starting problem, very odd

I just got a 95 yj that has had an older cj motor installed. Why, I don't know, but anyway when you go to start it it doesn't start until you release the key. You turn the key all the way and it cranks over and over then you release the key it will start. Any ideas?????

Weak battery or charging system. Strong enough to crank the engine but not fire it at the same time. If it's a manual try starting in neutral without depressing clutch, that might give it enough juice, through reduced friction, to fire while cranking. But long run checkout the electrical system to get more juice while cranking.

I've got a couple MGs that do the same thing.

Low battery could certainly be the problem. Do you still have electronic ignition in it? If you are using an old battery/coil system, there are several issues which could cause this problem.
