Transmission Help

I have a friend that has an 81 CJ5. He wants to put in a sbc instead of the straight 6. He also has the 4 speed in it which I believe is an SR-4 . But he was thinking about putting in a sm420. I've searched on the internet and from what I have found it looks to be pretty straight forward. But has anybody done this and how easy is it? Also what other parts would he need. Thanks for the help!!

Here's some good conversion info (way too much to re-type):

I'm not familiar with the 420, but from what I've read it looks great. Good luck!

Is there a better transmission that could be used? He really wasn't that set on the 420 just wanted something that would last.

What is the jeep going to be used for? Mud, crawling, daily driver?
That will make a big difference. Does he already have that transmission? It actually sounded pretty cool, since it has a good low gear, its a four speed, and it should have a PTO option on the side.

I think that he is going to use it crawling and to play in the sand park that we have here. He doesnt have the transmission yet but found one for like $150 which I thought was a pretty good buy. I actually told him about it cause I think that is what I'm gonna be putting in mine eventually.

The 420 is a GM early trany. Hard to find. You can find one from a 2wd truck and buy the Novack adapter. Very good trany but shifts like a 2ton 1965 farm truck. This is also a longer setup. but you will gane a little room with the V8 instead of the I6. As long as you are carefull on engine placement! You will be happy with the setup.

If you go chevy, you should look at teh NV4500 trans. Ford transmissions bolt up to stock Jeep bellhousings for t-18 and T176 equipped vehicles.
