Transmission issues on a 77 CJ5 V8

My uncle has a CJ5, and asked me for recommendations on a new transmission. He said that it "will not shift." To me it sounds like it needs a rebuild, but I don't even know what tranny it has. He has the 3 speed with a 5.0L V8. Junkyards are not an option. The only CJs and Wranglers that come in are trashed and picked apart.

What transmission could it possibly be? Does anybody have a suggestion for a rebuild kit, or have a preferred repair manual? I know my way under the hood, but transmissions and transfer cases are not my thing (yet).

I haven't even taken a look at it, so for now I'm going to take his word that it needs to be rebuilt or replaced. If it needs to be replaced and I find a ready to go replacement, we might do it ourselves. Rebuild will go to a shop most likely.

The cheapest thing to do would be pull the trans yourself. The take it to a good local trans shop and have them rebuild it for you.
Then bring it home and install. Done and cheaper than buying one. Plus you save labor for the remove and install. That's how I've always handled it for hot rods over the years. If you haven't worked on a trans before don't try it yourself, believe me once you tear it down and screw it up the shop will most likely charge you more. " ask me how I know that one". Lol

That's what I was planning on doing, assuming it's an internal issue that will be fixed with a rebuild. I've driven it once when it was having a slip, and it would pop out of 2nd a lot, so I assumed it was bad synchros.

I looked at it and it seems like it's just the clutch. We towed it to the shop his friend owns, and it'll be getting clutch, rear main seal, oil pan gasket. Plus a rebuild if it needs it. Anything else while the tranny is out? Oil pump? Transfer case fluid?

Transmission should be a T-150. Ive got a 77 CJ7 with the same one. I have rebuilt it myself a few times. The first time i replaced the synchros. It kept popping out of several gears. Once i got it back together, it still popped out of one gear so I replaced a pressed on gear that had perfectly ground down and had gone unnoticed. It still pops out of second if I shift up to second and slow down in the same gear. It doesnt pop out if I gear down to slow. One day when I'm not lazy I'll take it out again.

It's at a mechanic right now and I don't know what's going on... I took a look at it and it would start just fine, I'd put it in gear, give it a little bit of gas, and slowly let off the clutch like I was learning to drive again.

The Jeep seemed to catch and go into gear once, but it just never went into gear. I strapped it with my YJ around the street to load it onto a flatbed, then towed it to a mechanic. When we got there, we parked next to the garage, then I strapped it to the line of cars and pushed it a little. My reason for saying that is it rolled just fine...

The mechanic thinks it's something in the axle, where it's preventing the transmission from going into gear. It's been in there for three weeks, and took half the time just looking at it, then ordered new hubs.

It feels like it's in neutral constantly, engine revs just fine and drive train rolls just fine. So it's gotta be the tranny, it needed a rebuild of the synchros and a clutch anyway. Plus the engine is leaking from RMS and oil pan gasket, so I told him to have the mechanic do those things and oil pump while the transmission was out anyway.

Not the best mechanic so far...
