transmission oil question

hey

tried finding info with the search but im comming up empty.

friend of mine has a 95 wrangler, 5 speed, 4.0 and ive been doing all sorts of maintenance work because im a mechanic by trade.

looking to change out the transmission oil, i see that it calls for a 75-90 where some GL-5 is compatible but some are not. i have gallons of shell spirax 75-90 but it's GL-5. http://www.shellusserver.com/product...ASXR75W-90.pdf

if thats not going to be good for the trans, would the spirax 50 be good? http://www.shellusserver.com/products/pdf/SpiraxGSX.pdf

i have gallons of both, and he doesnt have a lot of money to throw around but it's due.

opinions?

thanks

-Rob

Agreed you are in the wrong forum section, but the quick answer is No the Shell oils are the wrong oil. Very few GL-5 will work. Use a GL-3 or GL-4, or SAE 30. The GL-5 will ruin the syncros.

ha ha wasnt sure where to put it in the forum, i know my CJ3A belongs here.

any preference on the SAE 30's synthetic vs non, brands, etc. 2nd gear syncro is already going out, makes shifting a real PITA.

if the mods want to move this to the proper forum, please feel free.

thanks

aw I don't think anyone really cares much it's a really slow pace in the CJ section... I wasn't trying to shuffle you off, it was more a joke about this section bein full of old *** jeepers that don't really care much about oil grades and viscosity and such...

I'm mostly in the JK forum, but I like to poke my head in every now and again... having an oddball DJ you can't really buy parts for has gifted me with quite a bit of useful little tidbits that might help someone...

I have heard good things about Redline MT-90, and even better about Redline MTL. I personally use the MTL. I do not know if the SAE 30w needs to be synth or not, just that it was added to the list of approved fluids for the AX trannies.
