Going by a tire size converter, the 255's are 30", the 265's are 32", but it all depends on the manufacturer for what the actual diameter is.

I would think the 255's should fit fine, but the 265's will probably rub

255/70/16 is 30.05" diameter. 265/75/16 is 30.60" diameter. I would think either would fit fine.

1st number is the tread width in millimeters
2nd number is the percentage of tread width that the sidewall is.
3rd number is rim diameter

((1st# x (2nd number / 100) ) / 25.4) x 2 + 3rd number = overall height of the tire. Looks a bit long hair, but it's really easy.

255 x .7 = 178.5mm (1/2 the rubber)
178.5 x 2 = 357mm (all the rubber)
357 / 25.4 = 14.05" (convert to inches)
14.05 + 16 = 30.05" (add the rim for total height)

Some interesting reading on tire size and conversions CLICKIE I'm not saying the online calculator is right or wrong, but with this info you can do your own calculations.

wow yes that does work! thanks.

metric is so confusing. i wish the 16" rim would use the 31 x 9.50 or 31x 10.50 dimensioning.

thanks for posting that ray

my 245/75 r16 is a 30.8 inch diameter

what doesn't make sense is why a goodyear MT/R would size like this

265/75- would be almost a 32
315/75-would be almost 35

i thought the perspective changed the height not the section width?

I have a stock TJ with 265-75-R15 on it and they do not rub. I am assuming other then the hole in the middle for the wheels the R15 and R16 will be the same. I am going to downsize because I have the 2.5 auto and it is a dog with these bigger tires and stock gears. I love these wheels but I don't know what size they are width wise so I don't know if I can put a small enough tire on them to get me a little more power or not.
And yes I am going to paint the flares, I just recently picked this up and haven't had time or the weather to do it yet.

Did you figure this out yet?

Just like Ray San Jose said.....
Ray - San Jose 255/70/16 is 30.05" diameter. 265/75/16 is 30.60" diameter. I would think either would fit fine.

what i found out is that a 245/75 is a 30.6

and the others are a bit above 31 except the 255/70.

the 70 applies to tire diameter

70=7 inches. then you times that by 2 plus your wheel diameter

7+7+16=30
7.5+7.5+16=31 roughly or about 30.6

This is sooooooo wrong. Where did you get this information? 70 is a percentage of the width.....

Then we'll just have to add some more math

Quote:

It's just a simple coincidence that the 70=7 inches.

70% of 255mm is 178.5mm

178.5mm = 7.02 inches.

You have the correct tire size, but for the wrong reasons.

I'd suggest the 255/70/16. You could probably run the larger size but I think they would be tucked. I like a wheel to fill the fender-well nicely but the second size may be a hair large. That's the stock tire size that came on my Z71 back in the day. I have friends who are running similar to the mentioned tire sizes on TJs: One runs 31's(actual 30.5") with a 2" lift and one runs 32"s(31.4") with a 4". Whatever you decide, post a pic for us when you get them!
