33s on 4 cyl yj

I hear it can be done I have a little 4 banger and 4" lift bout to add 2" boomerang shackles and was thinking im def going to go bigger than the 31x10.50 im running now, but I want 33s but this my dd I commute 20 minutes to work and 20 from I hear of ppl using 35s as a trail jeep, would this be a horrible idea to use 33x 12.50 ? Thanks for any input

the key with running any tire that is larger then stock, whether you have 4 cylinders, or 8, is to be geared properly for the tire size you want.

now, there are 4 things you need to think about when deciding on a gear ratio
1. tire size
2. engine
3. transmission
4. what can fit in your axles.

you already have 1 and 2 figured out, which leave 3 and 4 left.
now, do you have the 5 speed manual or the 3 speed auto?
if the 5 speed, then you want 4.88 gears, with the auto, 4.56s would be better suited.
since both those gear ratios are avalible for the dana 30/35 axles you have, then you do not need to worry about number 4.

another thing to start thinking about is if you really want to spend money with that rear dana 35, or replace it with something better. but that is a whole other can of worms.

I don't see how that is even possible. I have stock 4.10 gears, the 4 banger, 33s and I've never been able to get over 55.

Maybe it's my 3 speed auto?

My friend has the same Jeep as me with a 5 speed...no power at all..struggles to go up small hills with 33's

Was considering a V8 change but more and more I drive it I'm liking this 4 cylinder. Definetly needs lower gears for around town driving.

Drove to work this morning at 55 mph at about 2300 rpm

Must be. Mines a stickshift and it's a pain in the butt to try to get up to even cruising speed let alone 55+.

I have an 89 stock and have a buddy who's looking to get rid of 31" tires. Will i have to make any mods to my gears/lift to make these work?

it's a 2.5 I use as a surf wagon so I wasn't going to do any major suspension or engine work just yet.

Please advise

I had 31 on stock I was fine just rub your fender flares if you go on bumpy roads not going to destroy anything

I have a 98 4cyl and run 33 bf muds with a dd of 75+ miles with stock 4:10's, i can hit 75 all day in 4th and will shift to 5th if its level, once i hit a hill its back down to 4. Mind you, i have a fresh Jasper motor, header, cold air intake, but I do have a heavy tire carrier, front and rear bumpers and one seriously heavy tool bag.
