Thumbs down 68 CJ5 Original Tire Size??

Hello, I am new to the site and have never posted on a forem before, so I am really not sure what I am doing, but need some help. I have recently bought back our family 1968 CJ5 that I sold to a friend many years ago. When I bought it back, it had been parked in a barn and not started in a few years. Not sure how I got it home on the rotted out tires, but I did. The tires that were on it were all 15" tires, but in various sizes. Can anyone tell me what size were the factory tires that originally came on it? When my dad bought it in 68, he changed out the tires for some heavy duty off road tires with puncture proof tubes, due to the mesquite thorns in West Texas, but if I remember correctly the front tires would rub against the wheel wells sightly if turned to sharply. Can anyone tell me what the largest size off road tire I can put on it without rubbing? Should I stick with the original factory size tire? Any suggestions would be helpfull! Tire sizes really confuse me since some appear to be metric and some don't, so give me tires sizes both ways, if you can. Thanks, Gdaddy

I would think someplace between a 205 and 235 would be the stock size. I would learn towards the 235 myself if keeping it all stock. what size(s) on on it now?

My 1966 CJ with the Buick V-6 came with either 775-15 or 815-15 from the dealer. I went to 900-15 on a wider rim which was the biggest tire available at that time. All my buddy's also ran that size on their CJ's. I also ran that size on my 46 CJ-2A . Those sizes would be 215, 225 and 235-15 these days. Still have the 66 and have done a lot to it over the years, now running 31 1050 15's on it now. Great jeep but not like my 05 Rubi that I have done a lot to.

Thumbs down 68 CJ5 Tire Size

Thanks everyone for information as to the factory tire size on 68 CJ's. Actually, I was given 205, 215, 225 & 235 as answers, so I guess that if I stay in that range, I will be ok. Can anyone tell me if a 7.6 x 15 translates to any of these sizes? I came up with the 7.6 size from some jeep history site that I was looking at earlier today. Thanks again, Gdaddy

x2, any tire site like discountire.com or tirerack.com will let you plug in the year make and model and it will recommend the stock size tire...stock size wheel too because if you put in that you want a 15x8 wheel on a wrangler tj it will say that it recommends a 15x7..also when if you put in 31x10.50 tires it will pop up and say its not recommended on a 15x7 wheel

My 67 had Firestone town and country tires on 16" wheels. I believe they were 28". I think they were 6.0 x16.

Also, I had the 4 cyl...I believe the v6 had 15 inch wheels.
