ability to run 32's or 31's?

On my 01 TJ I had a trailmaster 2 inch lift and was able to run 32 x11.5 with a 15 x 10 rim. I had no issues with rubbing on or off the trails. I sold that jeep a few years ago, and I just purchased a 05 TJ, which currently has a 2.5 Rough Country lift and just stock wheels/small tires. I just got it out of the shop today for other repairs. I took it too a shop that just works and specializes in Jeeps. I asked what they thought about running 32's and was told that I would need at least a 3 inch lift to do that, and I would end up bending my fender and bumper by running 32's. I told him that I had no problem with the 2 inch lift and 32 tires in the past. He said the previous shop probably put a 3 inch lift on, since that is the most common on the market. ???? Last I checked, it seems the most common is 2 or 4 inches, not a 3 inch lift. Maybe I am wrong.

My plan was to run 32 x11.5 on a 15 x8 rim this time. Now, I am pretty confused on which route to go.

3 is extremely common because in almost all cases, there is no need for an sye as there is in most cases with a 4" lift...

The guy at the shop is wrong and you could run a 32" tire with your current 2.5" lift without issue...

I've currently got a 3" lift with 32x11.5's (rim is a 15x8) and could easily fit 33's if i wanted.

He also said if I went with 32's my mpg would drop down to about 12 mpg. I figured that, since that is what happened on my last TJ. Would going with 31's make that much of a difference on mpg compared with 32's?

again, wrong...

i would very much doubt you'd get 12 mpg with 32's. I'd guess you to be around the 15 mark if you're avg is around 17 now (guessing).

i dropped 2 maybe 3 mpg going from my stock tires to 32's...

good to know, I'll probably go with 32's again. I am sure my speedometer on my last jeep was a little off after I put bigger tires on there.

you need to change your speedodometer gear to gain accurate fuel milage

i went fro 28" to 31's without changing the speedo gear and my mileage went from 19mpg to 14-16 mpg

Not complaining.I dont care about the fuel mileage

I went from 19-20mpg's with 30's to 16mpgs with Duratracs 33x12.5x15 (they actually measure 32" tall by 11.50" wide on a 15x8" wheel) I've got the 4.0 with an auto & 3.07 gears. I did a 2.25" BBL to fit the Duratracs. I also changed to DC2 wheels with 3-5/8 backspacing to resolve rubbing issues, the tires clear the control arms and the the rear spring perches with plenty of room. (no rubbing on the bumper either)

When you say 11.50 wide, are you meaning the tread width is 11.50 or is that sidewall to sidewall?

check my pics in my profile. that was before I put them on the jeep and adjusted tire pressures down to 26psi. after I changed the tire pressure to 26 psi the tires squatted a little and when I remeasured it came to 32"x11.50".
