Are Beadlock wheels worth it?

Is it worth it to spend the extra couple hundred dollars on beadlocks instead of alloys for a CJ rock crawler? pros/cons?

As another alternative you can put a bead lock on the inside of any rim with an inflatable bead lock. If you plan on airing down to 10 psi I highly recommend running bead locks.

When bead-locks are not just for show, they arent an option, when they are just for show, get the Black-rock simulated bead-locks, they are easier to balance if you plan on not trailering your Jeep.

i've got to revive an old thread for my own education... without beadlocks i'm getting down to 12 psi, but the more i play in the rocks, the more i realize i'd like to get down to the 8 - 10 psi range comfortably.

i've looked hard at raceline and spyderlock beadlocks. can anyone help me out here? i need them to balance, my rig is my everything. my dd... and my crawler. i have a couple buddies with raceline beadlocks, i like them... and i know they'll hold up on the street. i know they'll both hold on the trail... but i'm looking for some folks with experience here..

can anyone offer any other advice?

I run Trail Ready Beadlocks on my DD, Rock crawler. The last time I had them balanced 3 of them took 2 ounces each the other took 6. I run MT BAJA MTZ they flex very well even without Beadlocks but and with the Beadlocks I've gone down to 5#.

Keep in mind few places will touch BL's. I mounted my tires and lucked out with a small shop that will balance them for me.

thanks for your input. i know a couple guys that sponsor our club here locally... both said they'd mount and balance them.. not too worried there. though both said, they better be quality beadlocks that are DOT approved. hence the spyderlocks or raceline. i've looked briefly at TR, i'll take another look though.

bob what's the width of your current wheel?

have you ever taken your psi low enough that you popped a bead or the tire "burped"?

tell me a little bit about maintenance. how often do you check them? i get inspecting after you wheel... what about routine maintenance?

how do they drive, do they handle differently than other wheels?

I check bolts typically once a month (takes 15 mins) more during the wheeling season, Regarding handling different nothing I notice, but they tend to bleed air a bit but no biggie.

you're not going to like this answer, but, per the experts on pirate, you really should check the torque on all the bolts on all wheels regularly, and NEVER overtorque, or the bolts will work themselves out over time and bad things could happen. I'll see if I can find the thread iffin ya want.

not saying you couldn't get away with not checking them regularly, but I, personally, would hate to be the guy that sends a lock ring spinning off his wheel into highway traffic.

ralph, current wheel width is 9", i'm running 37x13.50 toyo mts... yes i have had the tire burp on me a few times...

okay so if you're not wheeling.. then at least once a month? that's easy. i go over my rig at least once a month anyhow. checking the bolts won't put me out. crap i check tire pressure every few days....

ralph, i've heard the same... i know you don't want to over torque them.. you could pull the helicoil/timecert right out of the wheel...

maintenance isn't an issue. i would prefer to look things over more than not... last i want is to be stranded on a trail or a highway somewhere. especially if its routine maintenance that i should've looked at.

know what the torque is by chance? probably can't be much more than 10 ft-lbs on each bolt. i have a real good matco inch pound torque wrench.

people recommend starting at 10, then see if you're leaking air, and, if you are, retorque to 15.

now, the next part people don't always seem to agree. some say not to exceed 15. others say that if you are still leaking air, to torque up to 20.

I'm too jeep-poor for beadlocks, have to stick to a "thin" wheel.

honestly.. i'd probably live with the air weeping... i have a viair onboard air tank, if i have to air up every other day, so be it. i wonder how fast it leaks.

I would think each company has their own specs. TR says max 20FT lbs. The rock ring has 20 bolts... the tire bead would fail long before all 20 bolts loosened up enough for the rock ring to fall off. The TR beadlock uses a grade 8 bolt with a nut on the back side so you don't have to worry about pulling the helicoil out.

I found mine on CL new got all 4 for $700.

well that's good to hear, i'd rather it was a bolt and nut... helicoils or timeserts are only going to last so long.

as for the price wow, that's effing awesome!

That's probably true, i overstated my case, i should have just said one doesn't want to shed bolts on the highway.

REGARDLESS, seems like if you just make sure they're torqued properly often enough, you shouldn't have any problems.

are they nylock nuts or standard grade 8 hardware?

Just gotta keep your eye out for used ones. I picked up Trailreadys with tires on them for $750, sold the tires for $400. 5 beadlocks for $350..
