****WARNING: If talking about rim and tire size with a new guy causes you stress, then please stop reading now and go change the oil in your Jeep or something. If you insist on being one of those guys that will send me a link to the FAQ section, or tells me to do some research first, then I have this reponse. I have been researching this tire/rim stuff for over a year now, I have looked at more Jeep rim/wheel pictures than I have looked at porn pics in my entire life (that is hard to do!). And $1,500 or so bucks is a lot to throw away with a screw up or to be unhappy with the look. Just remember how stressful your first new rims and tires were before giving me crap ok?? Thanks!!

Here's my situation in a nutshell:

The time has finally come on my 2009 Wrangler X, 2 door, automatic to replace those embarrassing, humiliating, disgraceful, cookie cutter stock rims and tires. All I really want is my Jeep to look more like the classic Jeep look. That's all, just not embarrassing. I want my new rims and tires to look proportional to the wheel openings, sort of like they belong there ya know?

My stock tires make my Jeep not even look like a Jeep and it is no wonder no one returns my "Jeep Wave" because I am an embarrassment to the Jeep Community. I look like one of those guys that run 4 of those spare donut tires on his car just for laughs, except I am not trying to be funny.

I will be truthful with everyone, my Jeep is my main vehicle, it has to get me to work and back everyday, take me on weekend trips up in the mountains, and I live in Arizona where the highway speed limits are 75 MPH which of course means 80 right?? This Jeep will never do any kind of off roading short of a hard packed forest service road. My apologies, but that is my situation at the moment, and please do not think less of me. I am still a die hard Jeeper and ALWAYS give a Jeep wave!!

The only thing I am positive about is the Pro Comp 7069 flat-black rims. I have been in love with those rims since the day we met and they will look outstanding on my Jeep. That is all I am positive about unfortunately.

I had some nice 16x8's picked out and then I heard a lot of feedback about 17's and less sidewall flex and 17's will be more popular down the road, and 16's are gonna be harder to find, and blah, blah, blah. So now I am not positive anymore. I do favor the look of a smaller rim/bigger tire, but not at the expense of handling or any other negatives. Keep in mind that my choices for this rim are 16x8, 4" BS, 17x9, 4.75" BS, and that's it.

I am hoping and praying is that some of you Jeep Fanatics out there who are running 16's or 17's Pro Comp 7069's on a STOCK HEIGHT, NO LIFT, Wrangler X will be willing to show me some pics of your Jeep. Also I would appreciate any feedback or opinions on which rim size you prefer. Additionally, I need a tire to fill that empty wheel well and tire size and type advice is VERY much needed and welcomed.

Just remember, 2009 Wrangler X, 2 door, automatic, which I believe means 3.73 gears. It is an asphalt warrior, needs to climb mountains yet cruise long distances on a highway at 80 MPH, gas ain't getting any cheaper so I really don't want to screw with efficiency, and must look more "Jeepish" rather than the embarrassment it is now.

Thanks very much to anyone out there willing to help me out. It is very much appreciated!

Jon

The size of your rim on a stock Jeep may impact performance but not a whole lot. Especially for an "asphalt warrior" like you describe.
The biggest tire you can probably fit with no lift is a 33" tire. The brand/type of tire you get is up to you. I have Mickey Thompsons. They're kind of pricey though...at least for me. The tire will definitely mess with your MPG's though. The bigger the tire the worse the gas mileage. By the way, most after market tire/rim combos look better then the stock parts. Just use common sense.
Last thing... try to shorten your post to get to the point so everyone knows exactly what you are asking.

Thanks for your feedback, it is very appreciated. I know it was long winded as well and I apologize. I felt that my goals and what my Jeep is used for was important to know for anyone who is willing to help.

I will be more to the point in future posts I promise, but I have been researching this subject for months and I am at wits end and not thinking rationally any longer!

First off, I'm not "one of those guys", despite what I am getting ready to do. Yes, I am getting ready to post a link to another thread. However, it is a thread that I started and it has quite a bit of useful information in it. In fact, it is dedicated to determining what the largest tire is you can fit on your stock Jeep, so it is right up your ally.

Now, onto your wheel question. I really like the Pro Comp 7069s. However, I do have a bit of potentially bad news. MANY of the Pro Comp wheels are on national backorder with no ETA. Therefore, it may be pretty damn difficult to find either 16" or 17" size.

Now, onto the size. I prefer a 16" size over the 17" size. There may be a bit less sidewall flex with 17" over 16", but the difference would be negligible in my opinion. I run 16s and 33s and love the setup.

As for tires, I would suggest Duratracs if you want that aggressive look while still being very good street tires. Another tire I would recommend looking into would be the Falken Rocky Mountain ATS or Wild Peaks (same tire, different sidewall design). That is what I run and they are great tires. Not as aggressive looking as the Duratracs, but still a nice looking tire.

And, cause I'm such a nice "that" guy, here is a pic I found for you.

This is 17" 7069s on 33" KM2s.

That was HUGELY helpful and I thank you much. You most certainly are not "that guy" and I am sorry I had to write that. Experience has taught me that the Forum Police can't wait to pounce on a guy like myself. Regardless of the fact that I have been researching every FAQ, threads, posts, and pictures for over six months now.

I am aware about the backorder problems with my Pro Comp 7069's. That adds more ungency to my decision making process because I have to have those rims, and if I have to wait long, then I best make up my mind damn quick!

Thanks again, if you think of any more advice, please jump in again because I need all I can get!!

@JVDBogart I have the same "donut wheel" problem. I also have an 09 Wrangler X only it's a standard. I have those rediculous stock tires and rims as well. I am also looking for a bigger, more respectful looking tire and this forum has been VERY helpful. I'm sure Jeep owners are NOT ignoring you due to your "tire size" sometimes they just aren't paying attention. I do understand your need for a better looking jeep however, so best of luck in your search and be sure to post a pic once you are refitted!

Your post made me laugh several times! I'm in the same boat in regards trying to decide on wheels and tires and SIZES! I love the 7069s too but I also like the Level 8's. I have a 2013 Billet Rubicon 4 door and I have got to get some matte black wheels on it ASAP. I think I'm going to go the 16" route and a bigger tire. I don't want to put a lift on it so whatever size tire I choose has to work with the stock stance. God luck to you my friend.

since your not going to be "offroading, did you ever think about just going with someone's Rubicon takeoffs? They are 255/75/17 but the stock rubi tires are bfg km1's, if your just wanting a look then just buy some stock size A/T or M/T tires and your gas mileage should be fine. If your buying new wheels and tires and looking at 33's, I would like to know where your seeing 1500$ prices because that's a steal unless your looking at some crappy tires.
