Backspacing

Hey guys, sorry if this is yet another noob question. But I've recently gotten my '06 TJ X with the standard 15x7 steel wheels and am dying to swap them out for something bigger. I've seen a lot of guys talking about backspacing on this forum and the amount that you need to be able to fit bigger tires without adding a lift kit and at the same time avoiding rubbing against the fender. Can someone please explain backspacing a little more in depth? Thanx.

FYI, most Jeep factory wheels have right around 5.5" of backspacing. So if a wheel has 4.5", that means it will be positioned 1" further out of the wheelwell.
