Best way to black out white letters?

I have more time than $ right now and the tires we are using are mounted white letters out. Is there a good, effective way to black them out, other than spray paint? I don't want to have to pay to have them remounted...

Thanks

Try mineral spirits w/ scrub brush or maybe a strong degreaser (simple Green).

It's going to be a pain. The rubber that makes the letters white is acutally all the way around the tire with another wider piece of rubber on top of it. All they do is shave the thin layer of black rubber until the white rubber shows in the form of whatever letters are on the tire. It's probably going to do more damage than it's worth.

Well poop. I hate white letters, but I don't want to pay to have them swapped.

You could always try it, they are YOUR tires lol. It isn't going to hurt the integrity of the tire, but my thought is the harder you scrub, the more white rubber that's going to come to the surface. I actually wrote that while I was on break at work I work for Michelin and BFG lol, and I was making white walls

Scotch brite pad or sos pad .i would wet the tires with brake cleaner paint thinner or something and scrub then hose down

Hey Linda, give KIWI black leather shoe dye a shot, liquid not paste.
I've used that on occasion, bout the only thing I know of that comes close to the old "Tire Black" from the old days. And yeah they did make a liquid for dyeing tires shiny black, long before Armour All and the rest came out with the clear gloss shine.

The stuff that made up Tire Black would probably have the EPA at your doorstep if they found out you had some.

The tire black may work. I'm not sure if that's what the dye we use is called. I'm still not sure though. Natural rubber off of the rubber trees is white and we have to dye all of it. With that being said, we dye it in it's natural state, before the rubber is cured ( put in a press and cook the hell out of it). I'm not sure how well it'll absorb after it's a finished product. Also I wouldn't use paint thinner or any other harsh chemical as you stand a chance of breaking down the componets of the tire and speeding up the aging process, ie dry rot or cord spread in the skeleton of the tire. It could end up in a catastrophe of the tire :facepalm

You may try calling a local high school or college that have a program for mechanics, sometimes they do things like that for free just to give the students hands on experience. Good luck!!

You could use a black paint marker (such as those designed for graffiti) im quiet sure that would do the trick they have wide tips that would make it easier and also its real paint not like a sharpie marker that would fade and change colors. try to get one at an art store

Might work. You can also get em at any hobby shop. Testor's makes em.

Hmm, if you don't like white, and don't want black, I guess you could be different and paint em a different color.
Maybe pink?

yea exactly any store like that. and the paint in those markers are guaranteed to be extremely opaque and permanent. especially those bought off certain websites.
and yes they come in many different colors lol

LOL! I want black... I'm not really a pink girl.... I have some black paint pens on hand. And some old white letter tires that came off the XJ sitting around. I think I'll test one out tomorrow.

It's not lifted yet.... Most of the lift came today, but apparently either RC or Brown Santa screwed up and forgot some springs and things..... :-/ Hopefully it will come tomorrow, but then it's gonna be a couple of weeks before we can bribe someone to install it...

X4 on the paint pens, we used them in the Air Force on aircraft tires to make "raised white letters" on them. worked very well. just do it in black.
