confused on tire size...

So im in the market for new tires and have historically only bought tires that fit my vehicle stock, but now that i have a jeep and looking for 35" tires...i need some clarification. What does 315/75/16 compare to? is that also considered a 35?

its considered a small 35. probably a lil closer to 34's when mounted/aired up. 16' wheels have limited choices on tire sizes.

i guess 15 or 17 is the way to go. if the tires are 35X12.5R15LT, what width should the wheels be? like...15x8 or 15x10
these are the wheels i like...

15x8 will give you more space on the sidewall for extra protection.

If you are not planning to go bigger then a 35" I would look into a 15" wheel. You tires will cost less and there are a larger section in a 35/12.50/15

If it helps most online tire stores will show the actual size of the tires in the info on the tire. Most 35" tires are a little under.

The 15" & 17" are a more popular size for bigger tires these days. The 16" still have a decent selection but not as many as the 15 or 17.

You can run a 8" 9" or a 10" wide wheel with a 12.50 wide tire. Most prefer the 8-9" wide wheels but many run 10" wide wheels.

I am running a 37/12.50/17 on a 17x8.5" wide wheel.

Look for a wheel with around 3.50 to 4.50" of back spacing.

The more back spacing the wheel lists the less it will stick out from under the Jeep. So like a 5.25 will be close to a stock wheel. A 3.50 will stick out further.

Personally I like the Mickey Thompson, ATX, ProComp Alloy just to name a few. They all make some good looking black wheels. There are tons of choices out there.

yes, you get so much more sidewall flex this way. Im running 12.5 wide on 8 wide rims. I had wanted 10 wide rims, someone mentioned this so I went with 8. Couldn't be happier with that decision after watching these tires bend over rocks & roots & stuff when aired way down.

Just so you know. This is the formula.

315x.75x2 +16= 34.6
25.4
