Duratrac's Symmetric or Asymmetric?

On researching Goodyear Duratrac's I wanted to make sure they were not asymmetric treads because I want to mount them with the black letters out, so I wrote to Goodyear to get the official word.

Here's what I wrote to Goodyear:

Quote:
Hi, I am interested in your Duratrac tires in LT285/70R17. I noticed they
show they are OWL (outlined white line). Can you tell me if one side is
white line and the other is black? I have black rims and would like my
tires to be black also with no white letters. Do these specific tires in
this size LT285/70R17 come with black on the reverse side? If so, are these
tires directional? Can they be reversed? Thanks, Mike
While waiting I did some searching and couldn't find anything that confirmed they were asymmetrical, however, I did find several links that describe them as symmetric tread. Great I'm thinking!

Here's the response I received from Goodyear:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting our web site and for thinking of Goodyear for your
tire needs.

Tires that are produced with an Asymmetrical tread design are manufactured
specifically to improve handling and reduce noise, The tire can rotate in
either direction but to obtain the benefits of the asymmetrical design the
tire must be mounted with a specific side facing out. The outboard side of
the tire will be stamped "mount this side out".
If an asymmetrical tire is inadvertently mounted with the wrong side facing
out, it will cause no damage to the tire and should simply be remounted
with the proper side out so that all of the benefits of the asymmetrical
tread design will be realized.

The Duratrac has OWL on the outer sidewall and black inner sidewalls.

So that stumped me as I was pretty certain they were not asymmetrical. (Now I did mention "directional" in my original communication, but that was before I understood the difference between directional and asymmetrical) So I wrote back to get them to clarify.

Here's what I wrote:

Quote:
Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for responding to me question. However, you didn't really answer my question.

What I want to know is if the Duratrac tires are symmetrical or asymmetrical tires. I've heard a lot of people say that they are not asymmetrical but I wanted to ask Goodyear for the official answer.

Please let me know asap.
Thanks,
Mike
A day later, here's the response:

Quote:
The tires are Asymmetric.

Jennifer
While researching I've found a handful of tire websites from the web that say:

"the Duratrac's symmetric tread design combines large shoulders and highly angled center tread blocks to enhance stability and traction in dry and wet conditions."

"Its thread is designed to be wide, deep, highly angled, and symmetric, perfect for producing grip in all kinds of surfaces."

"The symmetric tread design sports self-cleaning shoulder blocks that prevent the build-up of dirt, snow, gravel and mud"

Is this Goodyear rep full of poop?

Just realized I should have posted this in the "Tires & Wheels" forum. Sorry admin, I'm sure you'll want to move it.

They are symmetrical (or at least on my 31's). You can mount them any way you wish. Her second answer was probably a mistake.

You can mount them in any size any way you want. White or black out.
