I wanted to do a quick report on the newish Falken Wildpeak AT3W, mostly because there isn't much information, reviews etc out on them. I had these mounted a little over a week ago and I chose to go with this tire because i was looking for an all terrain tire that is cheaper than the BFG AT KO2 and Duratrac as I'll probably be upgrading to a new wheel/lift/tire in the next year or so. I got it in the 265/70r17 to fit my stock Jeep. As far as looks are concerned, they are a great looking tire. Very aggressive tread and sidewall pattern. They are very quiet. Compared to my BFG AT's on my other vehicle, they are just a tad louder than stock. I didn't notice any change in fuel mileage going from the stock Jeep sr/a tires even though they are noticeably heavier and wider. (3.73 gears) I didn't really get a good chance to take them off road although they gave me no problem in 2wd on old fire/logging roads. However, that is about where my good first impression ended. I only had these tires for a week and had less than 500 miles on them when i blew a tire coming out of a gravel driveway. There is a 1" cut in between the tire lugs on the bottom of the tire. As far as i can tell, it was just gravel as that driveway is very clean. We were at the cabin and had vehicles going up and down all weekend, highway tires, performance tires on a subaru wrx, and cooper at3's on a couple other suvs. But it was the brand new state of the art all terrain that failed on some simple driveway gravel. Not exactly what i expected from this tire. After much haggling and shouting with my local dealership, he agreed to replace the tire for me. I'll keep running the tires, and i'm hoping it was just a stroke of bad luck or manufacturing defect, but they have me feeling pretty in-confident.
There used to be a few lengthy threads on this tire, but they seem to have disappeared. Odd.. even the thread Discount Tire Direct started on them is gone now. ???
Sorry the tire shop has the tire and I never got to take a picture. I was really hoping they would do well because of the price and they look good. So I'm just hoping it was a manufactoring defect and they'll be gtg for awhile.
Ran 35x12.50x20's on my f150 and would have gotten 55k fairly easy but the alignment got out of wack and screwed one up. Replaced with a set of Toyo AT2's and so far, the Toyo ride is much better. I really can't complain about the Falkens though.
After 28,000 miles of fairly hard use on a 6,000 lb. rig, my P285/70-17 Falken A/T3Ws looked awesome with even wear and 8/32nds of tread left. Traded that rig off for a new JLU and now I'm considering tires again.
The Falken is hands down the best A/T tire I've ever used, and I've used just about everything on the market. But I'm just one of those guys who always likes to try something new so I'm not sure what I'll go with. I do know that you can't go wrong with those Falkens though. They are superior to the other offerings, despite the fact that they aren't overpriced like the others.
I never did have further problems with these tires. I replaced them after 20,000 miles with 285/75/17 ridge grapplers and I would have to say I like them better in every way. They’re made in USA for one, they’re quieter, and they ride much smoother. And that’s comparing the P metric version of the AT3W to the C rated version of the ridge grapplers. The ridge grapplers are also much better in rain as they clear water better. A bit more expensive? Yeah, they’re about $30 per tire more. Worth it? In my book every penny
