Angry Front Suspension Instability

My 2004 Wrangler with 30" Goodyear Wrangler tires and factory option alloy wheels develops an extreme front vibration/oscillation at speeds around 55 mph. Even a moderately uneven paved road will trigger the oscillations that feel like a wheel is coming off. Cutting speed below 50 or increasing to above 60 stops the oscillations. I have had the Jeep in the Chrysler dealer shop 3 times for solution. They have checked alignments and balanced wheels but now say it is the tires. They have plenty of wear left. I say there is something wrong with the front suspension. Total mileage is only 35,000. Any ideas appreciated.

Well, one really easy way to see if it is the tires would be to rotate front to back and see if the symptoms are different / less. Or perhaps if you have access to a different set of tires (A friends Jeep, some spare winter tires that you know are good etc...) swap to those and see if the symptoms are that same or not.

Tire rotation first, like said already. Then if you feel like wrenching, take your track bar off (just the lower bolt) and see if everything looks good then put it back and make sure it is tight. That seems to cause it the most! I'm sure they have gotten your alignment in spec by now... My tires cause it so I cannot rotate them or it won't go over 45!

New tires cured mine. You have a classic case of death wobble. Mine started at about the same mileage as yours running the stock goodyear wrangler 30" tires. The dealer said that the tires had plenty of mileage left on them, I had the tires rotated, balanced and had the Jeep aligned. None of this worked. As soon as I put on the new tires, it went away. Actually the new tires made my jeep ride like an entirely different rig.

Thanks JDsDream - I was afraid of that. Question - Did you replace with new tires of the same brand, size & type? If not, what?

Hate to sound like a broken record, but check the torque on your lugs. Loosen and re torque in a star pattern to 90-100 lbs. See if that fixes it.

I just bought an '06 Unlimited on Tuesday and have the same issue. Please tell us which tires you bought. Thanks!
