The short answer is yes you can run 33's on a sort of stock setup. If you are going with stock wheels you need to get 1.5" spacers for each axle so you get inner clearance with the additional width of most 33's. if you go with new wheels make sure you get wheels that are -6 offset which gives you 4.5" backspacing and pushes the wheel/tire out just as the wheel spacer does with the stock wheel. Also for reference there are what they call true 33's and you can also go the 285/70/17 route which is essentially a 33" tire as well. I just put that setup on mine with a -6 offset wheel and had plenty of clearance....hope that helps

well, i know they're not the biggest you can get on a JK but i thought i'd share my tire upgrade..
I went with General GRABBER AT2s. 275/65-18 they are exactly the same diameter only 2 pounds heavier and almost a full inch wider then stockers, with much better tread. No lift or spacers required, speedo is dead on and no rubbing.
It's nothing crazy but i'm happy with the upgrade

stock first,

like o said it made a Big difference in the look of the Jeep..
I was originally set on doing spacers to, not cuz i need them but cuz i thought i'd want them to give the wider stance / fuller look...
I'm pretty happy now, still mulling over 1.25" spacers..as it sits now with the 275/65-18 the sidewall bulge of the tires is a little less then 1" inside the flare lip....
I'm a little hesitant to do the scpacers..i have fears of vibration,( idrive my jeep 400-500 miles a weekand do 70 mph highway stretches everyday, a little vibration in the wheel can make for a very unhappy driving experience) i know i'm probably over thinking, but like i said i like the look NOW so much better then stock..i THINK i'm happy (famous last words)

You should be just fine with that setup. If anything you might get some inner fender rub at full lock if the backspacing isn't enough but that's easily fixed by wheel spacers or a bit of cutting.

ok i need immediate help.

i'm getting 285/70/17 tires. either toyo at2 (backorder) or falken wildpeaks.

the tire shop just called me and said that my wheels will not fit without a lift... on 0 offset 4.5 backspacing and the -12mm offset/4.5 backspacing is too aggressive and that too will not fit.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying about your offset and backspacing choices . . .

But in any event, if you've got a 8" wide wheel with 4.5" of backspacing, 285/70/17s will most definitely fit without a lift.

These type of alarmist comments are typical of tire shops. They've got a computer. The computer tells them what will fit. Just about anything outside of stock specs "won't fit."

You've got a standard Sport, meaning the stock tire is only 29" tall. So 285/70/17 (32.7" x 11.22") looks quite a bit bigger. But their computer isn't mentioning that 32.7" x 11.22" isn't even an inch taller than the stock tire that comes on Saharas, Rubicons, and Sport Ss, and not even an inch and half wider.

So 285/70/17 might even fit on stock wheels as is. Their computer isn't going to mention that--all it's going to say is that 285/70/17 is significantly bigger than your stock tire size and raise a red flag.

If you're going out to 4.5" of backspacing, 285/70/17 will most certainly fit under an otherwise stock JK.

look a few postings above and I have 285/75-16 on 4.5 bs with 0 off set and no issues whatsoever and no lift. I think 285/70-17 is going to be about the same as 285/75-16 size wise. mine measur 32.8" toyo open country.

I'm running 285/65/18 mud terrains on my 2010 Sahara. No lift. There is only a tiny rub when I turn FULL right (but not left). I took it on the trail this weekend and had a little scrub when I flexed. These got me about 1/2 to 3/4 inch extra ground clearance. I still might get a lift and bigger tires next go round, but this set up took care of me in some rough terrain this weekend.

Any chance I can get a view looking down side?

Would like to see how skinny tire is and how far they stick out.

I like em cause they don't stick out too much, but are not flush. I definitely see room for 285s to fit, and a trimming of the air dam to get 0 rubbing.

285-70/17 on 17x9 with 5" backspacing

0 offset on 17x9= 5" backspacing

No lift, Discount Tire tells me this will fit with no problem on stock JK. I'm trying to keep the tires even or inside the flares. Opinions, or is anyone running the same setup?

No plans for serious flexing, just for looks at this point.

Thanks all

I guess my question is does the wheel width contribute to clearance issues or is it simply tire size and backspacing? Can a 9" wide wheel with 5" backspacing rub when a 8" with the same backspacing will be fine?

Will tires and rims off a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (BF GOODRICH MUD TERRAIN KM 255/75R17) fit on a Jeep Wrangler Sport (stock set-up)?

If I want to put the dura trac's on the stock wheels and do not want to lift the Jeep I need 1.5" spacers? is this correct or am I way off can someone help?

Probably will need wheel spacers or it'll rub on hard turns.

Won't need a lift until you flex the suspension offroad, at which point it'll rub the fender flares.

Still rubbing fenders?

Jadmt,
Kindly correct me if I am wrong. What I interpreted this as, it clears the suspension components with that configuration. But if one engages the discos, enabling extreme articulation, it could rub the flares. Thus some type of lift would still be needed.
So with that being said, would .75 coil bushings in the front be enough to squeek by without rubbing under extreme articulation?
TIA

Awesome, exact angles I was looking for. Now anyone got these angles on the 295/65r18?

Just curious with the DuraTracs if they all look the same where tread meets sidewall and actual tread area is just wider or if tread and sidewall blend better on wider tires.

So as far as I can tell,

I can get aftermarket wheels like AEV 17" with 4.5 backspacing and put like 285/70/17 with no problem, right? I don't want to use spacers yet. But my magic question is, will the spare fit ok on the tire carrier (stock)? Right now my stock is 245/75/17.

thanks.
