Hey guys im new to the forum and im lifting my jeep im looking at the skyjacker economy 4/5 inch lift i currently have it stock sitting on 33s and im pretty sure im going to have to regear its bone stock except for ranch rear bumbper some fog lights and subs and speaker upgrades can anyone help me out or give there opinion on the lift ir any local shops near houston for that matter thanks o its a 08 wrangler x
For 33" tires thatvis WAYYYY too much lift for an 08. Some JKs come with 32" tires stock and can fit 33" tires easily. You should be fine with the gearing as well depending on your current gearing and transmission. I suggest you do some more reading before jumping into that kit. 4" is where people run 37+ tires on JKs, and you need much more than justthe kit for that.
I figured as much but at some point i was planning to put 37s i can fit my 33s just fine how it its ive mangled the shocks i have now and ive wanted to lift it when i saw that sky jacker kit it. Looked like a decent kit for price what do u recomend i apreciate ur input
Lifts are a prime example of you get what you pay for. We have had quite a few guys that came to us aftere doing these cheaper lifts needing to replace there springs because there X" lift now sits X" lower. Lifts are not cheap and you want to make sure you do it right the first time and not have to redo it down the road. Also, you want to get a kit that will allow you to make changes down the road if and when you see the need to upgrade.
Now, 4" of lift on a JK has more that needs to be looked at other than just the lift. You will be looking at drive shafts for one thing. There is just more cost involved in the higher the lift and like stated, you dont need a 4" lift for 33's. You can run 37"s plus on 4" easy.

I highly recommend NOT buying that kit. At my local shop I go to, some kid brought them his JK, this kit, and a set of 37s and told them to put em on. After he left they kept on referring to it as a POS but installed it anyways. They went for w test drive and said that the little 3.8L couldn't turn the 37s very well with stock 3.21 gearing and rode horribly. One trip down to Georgia (500mi) and EVERY single bushing had worn out and it was back at the shop.
Thanks bro i never really liked skyjacker rancho is my prefered company thats just what my wife thought would be nice im now lookin at the terraflex 2.5 with shocks any ideas? Heard anything bout it or any ideas for a different kit also since u mentioned gears when should i reconsider regearing i have 33s now and soon in next 6 months 35s and eventually end up at 37s
No problem. I'd just hate to see you spend that much money and be incredibly dissatisfied with it. I'm pretty sure thats a pretty popular kit. I have a TJ so I'm not up to date on the popular smaller kits. I would however consider OME shocks atleast. IMO Bilstein and OME are the best in the shock world and while pricey, are completely worth it. I just put a set of OME NitroSport shocks on my TJ and it improved the ride 10x compared to the crappy rough country ones I had on there.
What kind of transmission do you have? If its an auto, its already under geared and many go straight to 5.21(?) With it. Running 37s is very expensive and if i had to do it, I would do it once the very first time. I'm not sure what all goes into it but probably new axle shafts, possibly longer driveshaft depending on how much lift, steering upgrades, brake upgrades, gears, new control arms depending on how much lift, possibly some flat fenders. Like I said I don't know as I don't run them, but maybe someone will chime in that does.
35's are easier to do on the JK compaired to older Jeeps. Do you know what gears you are running now? Is it a auto or a manual? More than likley your will be okay to run the 35's but would be happier with a regear. If your looking to do 37's, then you will pretty much have to regear.
I think ur right about it being undergeared im about to either have tranny replaced or rebuilt i sucked some water through the breather tube one time wheelin crossing a river my dealer in alaska said just drain oil flush with seafoam and to get water out and play dumb to have it fixed under warrenty here in texas could the fact i have a constant drip of tranny fluid from the pan where it bolts up be robbing me of power? Im takin it in next week but it made the 4k mile drive just fine from ak to texas the way it was now suspension just feels like metal on metal even on smallest bumps the speed bumbs scare me now as sad as it is to say driving my jeep i now avoid them
