Nitto Trail Grapplers vs. Cooper STT-PRO

I have been shopping 17x9" wheels and 35x12.5x17 tires for a couple of weeks now, but have been frustrated at the lack of choices in the 35" category. We picked up some Pro Comp 7036s yesterday from 4WD's one day sale and so I'm starting to get serious about tires.

I went down a size and started looking at 315/70/17's and the selection is better, including access to D series tires instead of the heavier, stiffer E series. We have been debating Trail Grapplers vs. Ridge Grapplers, but the wife prefers the more aggressive mud tire (its her Jeep, after all).

Meanwhile, I run the ST-MAXX in 33" on my Taco and am a fan of Coopers. We got a personal recommendation for STT-Pros from someone earlier this week, and they're available in the 315 size.

Is anyone familiar enough with the Trail Grappler and STT-Pro to give a comparison of the two?

This will be on a '17 JKUR that will see 80-90% street use and 10-20% trail use (it is my wife's DD, and we get to go to the mountains once or twice a month on average).

I like my Coopers but I'd have no second thoughts about getting Nitto Trail Grapplers. If you're down to STT Pro versus TG's, you can't make a bad decision.

These were my final two choices and I ended buying the Trail Grapplers primarily based on recommendations from some jeepers in my jeep club. I don't have experience with the Coopers but I agree with the poster above that either choice should be good based on reviews.

I ended up getting a 285/75/17. They're only slightly smaller than my last set of 35" GY MTRs but I'm very happy with them so far. They balance easily, fairly quiet for an m/t, and although they are E load rated, at 28 psi on a light 2-dr., they ride just fine. I believe they are a heavier tire than the Coopers.

Agree, no bad choice between those 2... Interesting that the Ridge Grappler isn't aggressive enough. I run S/T Maxx and Ridge Grapplers. If I was choosing between those 2, I would put on the STT Pro's as they look better in my opinion.

I had originally wanted the Cooper STT Pro's but when it was time to make a purchase, there must have been a production issue going on. No one had any of the STT Pro in the 285/75/17. Nittos aplenty though, so that was my second choice. I'm happy with them, they're quiet on the street, handle well in all kinds of terrain and only 65lbs.

I have had both. Both are great tires, but I like the coopers better. Coopers seem to handle better in wet weather and seem to ride smoother. I have been in mud, snow, rocks, street with both and they are both good tires. If I had to do it again it would probably come down to which set was cheaper. LOL!

A friend who had a JKU had the trail grapplers and hated them. Mind you, we live in central PA and deal with all 4 seasons so traction is important and those lugs on the grapplers aren't siped/grooved for traction. I had the STT Pro and it wasn't the good on wet or icy roads since it's not at AT but was good in deep snow. I had a tire groover and siped all the bare lugs a month after I got them so it had a little better traction than normal. I went back to the KO2 because I need better traction than what the STT Pro gave me and wanted an aggressive-looking tire.

Not much snow here in GA, and the Wrangler MT/Rs on the previous vehicle weren't siped, IIRC, so I imagine the performance would be similar.

Prices are fairly close across the board. Will try explaining to the wife that 315 & 305 tires are about 92-95% of the size of the 35s and see if she is interested, but the previous tires were Es so if we can't get D load I don't guess it will be the end of the world.

* 35x12.5x17 Nitto Ridge Grappler E2 $336
