Correct, a 17x8.5 with a -6mm offset = 4.5" backspace. Also, a 17x9 with a -12mm offset = 4.5" backspace.
Tires are like shoes, some run larger than others even though they may be listed as the same size. 285/70R17 on a 17x8.5 with a 4.5" backspace shouldn't have a rubbing issues, if it does it will be minor. A 2.5" leveling kit or mini lift would clear that up completely and give you a little more ground clearance.

Anyone reading this that would like help, feel free to call TC at 1.888.459.4080 ext 51826 if you'd like to speak with a fellow JK owner. TC has a lifted 2010 JKU with 37" wheels and tires and a mess of other upgrades. He knows the fitments well and can explain things like TPMS sensor options and tire warranties much better than we can here via PM.
