please make me feel better about my wheels

i bought an 09 wrangler that i pick up tomorrow. it has the stock 16" wheels and i have been agonizing over what to put on it. finally settled on the AR predator wheels and when i ordered them from tire rack the goodyear silent armors where on sale at an amazing price, so i went for it.

here is what i bought:

AR predator 17x8.5 rims
goodyear silent armor 255/75/17

the great customer service rep warned me that with the offset on the wheel and the tire size, that it would be about two inches wider on each side. he also gave me a dislaimer that i may need some modifications done to my wheel wells. he said this was a worse case scenario and he was oblicated to tell me.

i bought the setup. please help my anxiety while i await their arrival on friday and reassure me that i picked the right combo.

i will be a mostly pavement driver, occassional light off road for now and plowing in the winter.

The silent armor tires are pretty good. I had them on my 06 LJ because I lived in the city. They worked well when it rained and the roads were slick. And I never had a problem while off-roading or driving through 3 inches of snow ( plowed roads in the mountains).

I almost bought them again for my 09 LK but decided to try something a little different just for the heck of it.

I will personally say the tires you bought are awesome and very well rounded for all terrain and weather conditions. Not to mention the tires are very durable. I loved those tires and think you made a great choice.

The wheel you bought is an inch too wide (ideally) for a 255 width tire. Other than that, the sales drone didn't know what he was talking about if the backspacing is 6.5" or less...
Those tires are quite decent for plowing and mild trails. You might look forward to wider tires if you want to keep those wheels though.

is it too wide (the wheel)? is it unsafe in any way?

are you %100 positive the wheels are 17X8.5 cause im pretty sure hilldweller is right that those rims are a little wide for a 255. i dont think it will be unsafe in anyway just that a wider tire would be the best fit.

i talked to american racing and asked several times and they said it is 8.5 inches wide. they also said the 255 will be no problem. what do you think?

If you go to Tirerack.com and click on the specs for the tire it will tell you the manufacturers recommended tire width.. for those tires it is 6.5in to 8.5in wide rims.

Those are an excellent wheel choice. No problems with the stock 255/75R17 size tire and with the 4.48" backspacing will be very usable with larger/wider tires should you decide to do a lift later.

thank you higand millet - starting to feel a little better. they come in friday, but i cant mount until sunday. the price was a real big deal. the tires saved me almost $500 for now and you are exactly right... i wanted versatility.

The only problem with 8.5" and 255 might come up when you air-down low; I wouldn't go lower than 15 psi or you might lose the bead.
A 285-305 width would be happiest on that wheel though.

^ hilldweller hit it on the head again that was the only concern i had was the bead. like he said just keep more than 15psi in em and be careful when the tire pressure is low. other than that you will be fine. happy wheelin

Currently I have stock 17x7.5 rims and supposedly they have 6.25 backspacing and 44.45 mm offset. I upgraded tires to 285/70/17 tires. I put 1.5 inch wheel spacers on there too. My question is I want the tires to stick out another 1 to 2 inches. They dont stick out even with the spacers. Is that because of the 6.25 backspacing? Do I need to get 17x8 or 17x9 rims and less offset? If so what would be appropriate? I am so confused.

I know this is an old thread, but I'll try and answer your questions.

Yes, the Stock Wheels do have the 6.25" Backspacing. I didn't like mine being stuck under the Fender either. Friday, I upgraded to these:



These are Black Rock Viper 900's in Tungsten color (they also make these in a Black Wheel...). They are 17"x8", have a 0 Offset, 4.5 Backspace, and are not Hubcentric. My Wheels now stick out about 2" outside of the Fenders. Here's a Garage Pic, since it was raining out yesterday. You can see about 2" of the Rubber "peeking out" from under the Fenders:



I kept the same Tires I had on the Stock Rims (bought these a few months ago...), Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors, 255/75R17's. I think my wheels give my Jeep a more aggressive look now, as opposed to the Stock Wheels:





It's kinda weird, that your 1.5" Spacers didn't do anything to push your wheels out more. However, the Stock Wheels are pretty far under the Fender, and the 1.5" probably didn't make that much of a difference in pushing them out towards the edge of the Fender all that much. I love the way mine looks now! It doesn't give my Jeep that "Shoved under" look, like the Wheels are connected directly to the Tub.

Might want to look into upgrading your wheels! That may be your answer.

Most lift kits suggest the use of a wheel with 4.5" backspacing to avoid rubbing hard parts up front.
I've never been a fan of spacers; why add weight and mechanical complexity anyhow?
