Potential new Jeep Wrangler owner with a few questions...
I am hoping to become a member of the Jeep family tomorrow. I am currently deciding between a base Wrangler, soft top, manual vs. an auto, hard top, with the upgraded wheels, power windows, locks, etc... The difference in MSRP is around 5300. I actually prefer a manual and do not really need or necessarily care for the other options on the upgraded model. The only thing I particularly care for is the nicer wheels and tires.
I am trying to get an idea of what it would cost me to buy some aftermarket wheels and tires. I am fine with 17" tires and wheels. I would prefer the tires to be a little more rugged looking than the tires that come on the upgraded package, but, I will spend most of my time on the road, so I do not want a super loud tire.
I am sure this question has been asked a million times, so please do not flame me. But, any recommendations for a tire and wheel combo that will look good, not break the bank, and not be too loud? Links and / or pics would be great.
I figure buying the base and upgrading the wheels and tires will probably be the best bet for me. I appreciate your time and help!
You can get cheap steel wheels and a set of nice tires for less than 2k. Jeep is proud of their wheels for sure... I think you are heading in the right direction, build it the way you want it. I'll vote for GY Duratracs as a great on/off road tire. I love mine, they look good, perform very well in all conditions and don't break the bank. If you spend some time looking at the picture threads and the JK forums here, you'll find all kinds of things you just can't wait to do to your new Jeep!
Welcome to the forum, don't forget to wave!
X2 on the duratracs.....I love mine and I paid $762 out the door for four 33x12.5x15. Add a couple hundred for some mid level wheels and your looking at about $1100-$1200 and you could sell the wheel and tire package you get on the Jeep when you get it to make some of that money back. Welcome to the family, it is a great family to be a part of. Have fun and do it the way you want it the first time because trust me you WILL want to go bigger as soon as you go a little bigger..........
Play hard ball. Tell them you'd get the manual transmission at the price listed, but you need upgraded tires. If they say No, walk away or say, "That isn't good enough". They'll work with you to get you what you need (be reasonable of course) or show them your backside. They'll call you back in an hour.
I am loving my JK so far. I do not plan on adding a lift, famous last words, eh!
I am pretty sold on the Duratracs after your recommendations and reading the reviews.
I am trying to figure out what is the best size to get. Am I better off getting a 17" tire and keeping my stock 17" wheels? Or, selling the 5 I have now and buying a different size wheel, where the tire is cheaper?
I see above that 32's is the biggest I can go, without a lift? What is the size, i.e., 275, etc... I see a 31 and 33 on the Goodyear site. If I need to go spacers, that is okay, as I will probably not do too much off-roading. But, it is not my preference.
I would appreciate any help you can give, I am feeling a little lost. I will keep searching, but hopefully someone weighs in and can put me on the right track.
