Spare Tire Question

I have searched high and low. Just a quick question...Just bought (4) 33's on soft 8s (4) for my 99 TJ. I do some light wheeling from time to time but nothing really serious. I found a really nice 31 inch tire to use as a spare for $50. Could I throw it on my carrier with the stock rim without issues and if so, could I use it on a trail as a temporary fix to get off the trail?

2.5" suspension 1.25" BL just FYI

I wouldnt do that size difference, even a short time. For $50, you could take it and find a cheap 33 with most of the tread gone and have them mount/balance it to use as a spare.

Yes you can but you're better off with a 33.

I think 5 of the same wear is best so that you can work the spare into the rotation.

Don't use a smaller sized tire for a spare, even for a short period of time using that 31 inch tire with 33's would cause more problems then its worth. As per the posts above, I would agree using a proper matching tire the best route. I've been dreading for the last year having a flat with the stock spare that came with my jeep. Tho the PO had put on 31's all around except for the spare which was a 30 when I bought my jeep last summer. Last month I had some extra money so I invested in a matching spare which will also be part of a 5 tire rotation.

Unless you're axle is locked, you CAN run a smaller spare, but your spider gears will be working 24/7 instead of just on turns. I would only run a small spare a short distance to get off a trail or get home/to a shop. low speed as well.
