Successful cleaning of wheels

As I mentioned in the new member check in, I just bought a 99 Wrangler Sahara. It came with unpolished aluminum wheels; the problem is they have accumulated brake dust and were not cleaned properly therefore they look very dirty even after cleaning with purple cleaner with soap & water. I will most likely take the rims off and clean the back side while cleaning. Who has successfully cleaned un-polished aluminum rims and then polished to the original factory shine.

Please list your proven cleaners, polishers and methods. Thanks!
