Tailgate Rattling

I upgraded to 31" Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs a little while ago, and squeezed em on to the spare tire carrier fine, after checking with everyone on the forum that this was OK. Now that spring time is here and I've taken to rolling up the back window (have soft top), the tailgate rattles with every bump or jolt in the road. This doesn't happen with the back window in, so I'm assuming the tailgate bar on the bottom of the window keeps it nice and happy.. The tire is nice and tight and it doesn't seem to have any play, rather the tailgate can move inward significantly if I push it, while its already closed. Has any one experienced this, and have a solution, or should I just get a second tailgate bar and throw it in the back.. Thanks for the help!

Check the latch catch on the tub and adjust it in a bit more.

I had somewhat the same issue when I upgraded to 32"s. I started hearing this rattle and for the longest time couldnt figure out where it was coming from. Eventually I checked the gate and it had a huge amount of up and down play at the hinges. aka hinges all shot! Looked into it and replacement hinges were about $215. My solution was upgrade and buy a swing out tire carrier bumper. Hinges are still shot but no rattles now that they arent supporting the tire.

Thanks guys, the hinges seem fine, so I'll check the latch.

I had the same thing happen to me.
My latch was VERY loose!
A quick squirt of thread locker and some twisting and VOILA - no rattle whatsoever and I've been having fun with it!

Since upgrading to the 31's, I find that I really have to slam the gate hard to prevent the rattle.

Same here. I'm running 31" BFG AT's all around and have to really slam the tailgate to get it to close properly. Once closed though, no rattles at all. I'm planning on upgrading to 33's next year but haven't decided if I'm going to keep the 31" spare or invest in a swing out tire carrier to run a 33" spare...
