Tire upgrade

This is my first jeep, well 4x4 in general. '89 yj with a 4' skyjacker 7000 lift, right now it's got 31 10.50 liberator all terrains. When they get worn I want to get something more aggressive. I use my jeep as a daily driver but also go to the appalachicola national forest and off road sometimes. I'd say 85 to 15 percent. When I was in high school 16 years ago I thought super swamper thornbirds were the coolest tire I've ever seen. Now that I read a lot about them jeep guys hate them. Next choice would be swamper boggers, jeep guys love em. But I would like to keep my gas mileage around 14-17mpg which it is now. I like mt baja claws, BFG mud terrains, this Toyo tire I saw. Can you guys give a newbie a quick lesson on tires for jeeps, I never thought about the weight issue. Right now the jeep will catch the road lines and be all over the place. Also I have 31' should I stay with that or upgrade to 33'? Thanks guys and gals. Chef

If your rig is going to be on street that much boggers are totally out of the question, but the others will do just depends what kind of wheeling you do and where you located (i.e. snowbelt, always summer?). If you want to keep your mileage you'll have to stick with 31s, you can't go wrong with bfg all terrains or Goodyear duratracs. Both are awesome on the street but will get ya by most trails. Also if ya want to go 33s consider the supporting mods such as stronger tierod and possibly a regear

Thanks, I'm in north florida, so appalachicola forest and some Georgia clay trails only. Is there a major advantage to have 33' compared to 31'?

Honestly I can't say I've noticed too much. Over my Thanksgiving break I was able to get further than the guy in a JKU on 33s and keep up with the guy in a TJ on 35s, besides some of the deeper mud pits. How far you guy depends mostly on the driver, not saying I'm an expert yet. If you haven't gone yet, take it out wheeling first and be surprised at how far you can go. Then you'll have an idea of what kind of mods will suit your needs.
