Tire Width Help / 15's , 17's ( 285-70, or 33-12.5 )

Hello, just curioius on your thoughts..

I seem to notice when your have a 15x(8 or 9) most people go with a
33x12.5x15 / duratracs or similar
but a 17" seems like more go with a 285/70/17 ? just curious why the 11.5"
versus a 12.5" wide tire on a ( 17x 8 or 9 )

I have a set of 17x9 with about 4-1/2" BS - ready to get some tires for them,
local DT - today told me 285/70/17 will look great, and if i don't like em, they will take them back ( within 30days ) and order me 33x12.5x17

285's are readily available in Duratracs, alternate brand 33x12.5x17 - they can get me at the same price - ( ex: Fun Country II's D-C )

-- any concerns going with the 12.5 ??? I have a 2"AEV level kit

There aren't really "concerns" per say except the fact that some states have laws that require your tires to stay within your wheel wells (or as close as possible)...it's not really enforced that much unless you just happen to get that one cop that wants to annoy you about it lol. Other than that, it's all in personal preference...the 12.5 will stick out more than the 11.5

It also comes down to selection. There aren't nearly as many options in the 33x12.5x17 as there are in the 285/70/17.

hi, thanks. I found a tire in both sizes. just not 100%sure which one is best and/or why ?

will 285/70/17 look good on a 17x9 wheel?
will 33x12.5x17 have any unforeseen issues, because of the width?

285's Duratrac's
33x12.5-Dick Cepek F-C II's, I located both - at the same price roughly

Either one will work fine. I prefer the look of the Duratrac over the DC, but that's not taking anything away from the DC. A lot of people love those tires.

The 285 will look just fine on the 9" wheel. Here is my 285s on 16x8.5 wheels.

That's a 34", 12" wide tire. Too high for use without a lift, and too wide to use on stock wheels – which have a bs of 6.25" – without using wheel spacers to move the tires out from the Jeep.

I'm sure peeps have tried, though.
