too old?

I was just looking over my tires on my new-to-me TJ; tires look like new; not a mark on the side-walls, but the dot code shows they're from 2001.
(last 4 on the dot code: 5001)
lots of tread, evenly worn. (can't see "wear" at all, its so even). PO only put 10,000 miles on the vehicle in the 10 years he owned it. (used only for plowing his driveway), and I think much of the time, it was garaged.

but still---12 year old tires?

The radial tires can develop flat spots after setting for a long time, which will give the vehicle a rough ride. The flat spots can also cause the belts to break and the tire will start coming apart especially when brought up to highway speeds.

Do not risk it. Buy new tires.

Not sure about you, but my life, and the life of others is worth more than a set of tires.

I know my local discount tire will not touch a tire older than 5 years.
