wheel bearing growl

I have a bad wheel bearing/hub,it started as a low hum about a week ago and now sounds pretty loud. I am replacing it today, however I am wondering if anyone has driven any extended period of time with one of these things growling. It was difficult to diagnose,no movement in the wheel, and little sound when there was no weight on it.
