wheel width

getting new tires and wheels, what width wheel should i get when running
305/70/17 ??

8.5-9" width would be best, this way if you air down you will be less likely to lose your bead.

Maybe I missed something, but you should always start with the tire manufacturer's recommended rim width range and if you want to ensure bead seal go for the low end of the recommend width range or 1/2" less at most.

The OP didn't even post what specific tire he is interested in and everyone is recommending rim width. Every tire has a rim width range recommended and that is what should drive rim width selection not ad hoc recommendations.
