08' Wrangler Sahara Lost Key

Yup, 1st post. Great forum, I love my wrangler, and I'll be around more often.

In a bind, lost both keys (lost 1st one years ago) to my 08' Jeep Wrangler Sahara. I called my dealership, and they said I had to get it towed there and they couldn't give me a key because it needed to be programmed.

Thing is, my dealership scammed me before when I was having some engine trouble, so I'm not exactly trusting them in this department.

Question is, is there anyway I can get a key to my Jeep WITHOUT towing it all the way to my dealership?

If you saved the key code they should be able to provide it, but you have to go there and prove you own it unless you lost both keys. If that's the case, I think they might be right.

call some local locksmiths, they may have the equipment necessary

If he lost both keys and they were transponder he is going to have to go to the dealer, period. Case closed.

They will have to program the keys to the SKIM module. And for his sake he better hope not to many other keys have been programmed as if I recall correctly only 5 keys can be programmed before the SKIM has to be changed out. Gotta love technology!

I used to cut and program transponder keys. Up until about a year ago.

not necessarily true, I am an industrial locksmith and the company I work for has the necessary equipment to reprogram vehicles and transponder keys. The equipment isn't cheap and we don't have any jeeps so I can't say with 100% certainty that it would work, but we can reprogram other chryslers, ford, and chevys. Whenever a key is lost we reprogram the car and make new transponder keys.

Yeah so, did we but it just got to a point where the equipment and updates weren't worth it anymore so we just started sending people to the dealer. Most locksmiths do not make the investment to begin with.

thats why I said,

"call some local locksmiths, they may have the equipment necessary",

the OP doesn't have his location listed but if he lives near a a big city he may be able to find one, may not be any cheaper than the dealer, but he said he doesn't trust the dealer.

For those folks who already have 2 working keys, here is a place to get uncut, inexpensive transponder chip keys online:

Jeep Wrangler Transponder Chip Keys

These keys are American Made and will work in all 2007 through 2012 Wranglers

I think I've still got the key to my high school locker. An antique, now. Wonder if it's worth anything?

New transponder key from mobile locksmith

Just wanted to share.
I have a 2002 Jeep Wrangler TJ (Sahara).
I live in Toronto, Canada.

I lost my transponder key the other day and it was my only copy. My fault when I bought it used and didn't realize that the dealer didn't give me a duplicate til much later. So I called the Jeep dealership and they said they can get or order the right transponder key, cut, by using my VIN. This key will open the jeep doors, but to program it, I will have to have the jeep physically in their shop. That meant I'd have to tow it there. I called 2 dealerships and they told me the same thing. I thought, that's a big pain in the butt.

I found out there are mobile locksmiths who can do the job. So I got one to come over to my place with his truck and all his equipment in it. He first tried the "old school" manual way, which is free (labour cost only), but with no success and eventually had to order the key details from a database (from Jeep?), which cost a certain amount of money, he said. Once that was done, he knew how to cut the key with the help of the computer database, and now had a blank key that could open my jeep door - it could also start the car briefly until the ECU found out it wasn't coded, then it would switch off. He then inserted the key into the ignition, plugged in a computer, and then programmed the key. There was bit more to it than that, but that was basically it. It cost $300 CAD though! I thought it was too hefty a price - but I was desperate to get the car going.

I am now driving my jeep with that key. In fact, I drove it as soon as the locksmith was done - drove it slow with no particular place to go.

I would quickly get a 2nd key (and possibly a 3rd). You can program in keys, but you need at least two of them to do it (see Mabar above).

You state you live in NYC. Surely they have more than one dealer. Any Jeep dealer can do it and in fact any non-Jeep Chrysler dealer should also be able to do it for the key to my 2015 is identical to my former pickup - a 2006 Dodge.

Question Second key ASAP! What about backups?

Yeah, I bought my 2009 Sahara from a reputable dealer, but they only had one key. I know I need a second programmable key. Several local Jeep dealers are more than happy to take my money

Here is a question: can a "stupid" key be used as an emergency back up -- hidden somewhere on the Jeep, or does the Jeep require a programmed key for normal operation?

The reason I ask is that I see these new key cutting kiosks that state they can duplicate any type of key. Fine and dandy if it will let me open the Jeep and drive home in an emergency, but useless if it simply unlocks the door.

Any suggestions appreciated

It will only unlock the door. It will start the engine, but the engine will shut off within a few seconds.
