10th Anniversary Edition Rubicon VS Wrangler Sport with Rocky Ridge Conversion

So I am trying to decide if I should buy the Rubicon or the Rocky Ridge Converted wrangler sport. In 2003 when the Ruby first came out I bought one and was very happy with its capabilities. I went to the dealership today to trade in my 2007 Jeep Commander (which I traded in the Rubicon for the Commander- not a mistake but hindsight being 20/20 I wish I would have kept the Rubicon) and saw the Wrangler sport with the Rocky Ridge conversion and test drove it. I have to say I liked it. My question is:
Are the wrangler sports with the Rocky Ridge conversions as good on the trail as the Rubicons? Do the sport w/ conversions crawl as well. What am I gaining and what am I giving up if I go for one or the other. Any info on different shocks, axles, gear ratios,skid plates, abilities, differences, similarities, etc would be greatly appreciated. Anyone who has a Rocky Ridge conversion could give some insight? I miss my Ruby but liked the sport with the conversion. Thanks for any input on this guys and gals.

not familiar with the sport you mention, but does it have the d44 front axle, lockers, the lower geared lo gear in the transfer case? i think you need to a side by side comparison and then decide.

I would take a look at the upgrades that Rocky Ridge is adding to a standard sport and see if I could do it for cheaper, deleting the options that I don't want, and adding those I do.

My 2010 Rubicon unlimited and my 2013 10A Unlimited drive about the same, but the wow factor isn't even close. So that may be something (however dumb) to consider.

Oh...

I should have mentioned that the 3.6L Pentastar in my '13 seems to be a nice improvement.

We'll see.

If given a chance to wheel on of the two for a weekend in a two door set up I personally would pick the stock rubi even though it has no lift and smaller tires. If I was going to just drive one around wheel it a bit and didn't plan on doing anymore modding to it then the packaged sport would fit the bill for me.

Blackforest I do not believe it has the Dana's since it is a converted stock Sport

Never heard of them but I would bet good money on NO. The price for new jeeps mooded like that are wayyy higher then stock Rubies and I have a feeling they would be braging about it.

It's just a built up Sport model Wrangler with aftermarket parts [Smittybilt bumpers, winch and rock rails]. It seems Rocky Ridge just upgrades stock vehicles for dealerships. They don't even list what brand lift they are using. I would probably guess something cheap like ProComp or Skyjacker.

I would save your money and get the Rubicon and get the bumpers and accessories you want later on. And you can get a good 3" lift kit like Rock Krawler or Teraflex.

Ruby vs Sport:

What I found in a forum thread:

Thank Lithium Lotus. Yes they are using Pro Comp.

My decision is to go with the Ruby. I had a 2003 (wish I still had the Ruby Silver Bullet) and I loved that car so I will go with what I know. Gonna try and find a 10th Anni version in Anvil and do the mods on down the road.

Wow, there are about as many random ass companies slapping crap on jks and turning them as editions for dealers as there are companies "building" ar15s now. I have yet to see a company take a JK and build a purpose built rig with high quality and durable parts without the fluff. Unless that purpose is looking sweet. Where is the "Gen right" edition? Sorry for the rant... long run you'd be happier with the Ruby I think.

You would be spending more money to replace the procomp suspension with something better. Get the Rubicon and build it the way you want.

You could go with a Sport and make a Rubi killer for less money than the Rubi. The Rubi is the best of the best in stock form...but you can take a Sport for 10k less drop a dana 44 on the front, lockers and a lift and come in for less money (probably not by much) and out perform it. Just a thought.

If resale is a factor for you you will probably end up getting more on a special edition package back eventually then adding it on yourself. With that said you will get screwed either way so shouldn't be a huge factor.

Thanks guys. I have an appointment to test drive a ruby 10th anniversary edition tomorrow. Best part is it is the anvil color. Thought I wanted black but I think the anvil might be a good color. I have been told it is a tough color to find in the ruby plus it is loaded with everything.........body-color 3piece hardtop, body-color fender flares, unconnect pkg, sunrider soft top. So we will see. Very excited to get back to the jk but would like to keep my xk. Tomorrow may be the day!!!!! Thanks everybody for your help. Hope this thread helps others navigate the deler modded JKs

Much better, every shop in town has a modded wrangler they are selling for way too much money with cheap half assed mods. You bought a nice classy rig that isnt pieced together.
