Cool, you know this area pretty well then. I'm buying the 10A out of O'Neal in Bremen, you should recognize that too.

Small world.

Will you be upgrading the spare tire carrier, or will you run the stock spare tire carrier?

$29 is not a bad price to update the tire size. I would be fine with that amount. I am working out the details with my dealership to see if they will give me enough money on "trade-in" for the 265's that would be coming off. That will be the decision maker for me if I end up going with the 285's from the beginning or just run with the factory tires for the time being.

-Matt
My dealer only wanted to offer me $150 each for the stock tires. And since they list for $275 each, I thought that was way too low and decided I would try to sell them myself. I do plan on having the dealer change the tires instead of where I bought them though, so I can say when trying to sell the stock ones, they have zero road miles on them and only 1 or 2 parking lot miles.

My dealer also wanted to charge me $352 each for the new tires when I can get them for $289 each at my local tire shop, where I have bought all my BFGs for the last 15+ years for all my Jeeps and trucks.

To start with I will use the stock tire carrier since the hinges on the tailgate for the JK are supposed to be upgraded from the TJ and be able to take the weight of the spare. And the increase from the stock tire to the 285/75R17 is only; 6 lbs, 2" in diameter, and 3/4" in width. Hardly enough in my mind to matter that much short term.

Long term I like the looks of the AEV tire carrier that is supposed to work with the 10A bumper. But to start with I have better things to spend that $700 on.

Not sure about the KM2s, but I have run the older KMs on both my CJ7 and TJ without any trouble in the winters up here in NH. I'm sure there are a lot better snow tires out there, but for anyone with winter/snow driving experience, the KMs were fine in the snow.

But I also always run the thinner width tires that are 10" - 10.5" wide and 33" tall. Not the 33" x 12.50"s you hear a lot of people running. Width is the real problem in snow, especially with a light, short wheel base, vehicle like a Jeep. Since I run just one tire all year long, narrow is really the only choice for me.

The KM2s have even more edges in the tread pattern then the KMs did. Not quite siping like real winter tires, but should still make them better in the snow then the KMs were. So I'm not worried about running them.

I'm sure the KM2s would be fine but my duratracs are great. With as much snow as we get here and their ability to tackle everything else so well too, it's worth switching for me. Not saying you're wrong, just agreeing with the others who are switching as well. Shouldn't cost me much if anything either as the KM's are more expensive.

I would have considered those myself, if they had a 285/75R17 size available.

I know the area well, but not in that direction. I lived a couple miles down SR 61, south of I-20. I worked on the outskirts of Atlanta, so was driving out that way most of the time, so went through Douglasville everyday.

I know where Bremen is, and before my father retired in 2002, he was working in Temple. But I cannot honestly remember ever going to Bremen, heh.

Yeah, I have never run dedicated snow tires, and the stock tires that are on my current truck (265/75R16 BFG Rugged Trail T/A) have been exceptional in snow.

Your post puts things into better perspective, I think.

Are the fogs replacement bulbs for the factory units? If so, info please.

Well, may have just found a suitable solution from Recon for both turn and marker lights. Not a fan of their tail lights, but like the others:

Looks like a lot of you plan on swapping out your wheels and/or tires. I would be interested in a set of take off rims from anyone in the NY/Northern NJ area.

My planned mods are somewhat minor:

- Winch (once I know what the limited edition one will be)
- Bike rack
- CB
- Some sort of locking storage option for the trunk to store ammo when I go to the range.
- Locking storage for the passenger area. Possibly under seat.

I'm sure you will find a set - I've read a few posts from guys that don't like them. i'm the opposite - i really like them. I'm going to keep the stock wheels even if I go as high as 35s. I'm still debating running stock tires and lifting only after it's time to replace.

Why? ... its already sprayed with clear coat from the factory. I would never trust a body shop to apply anything over the OEM two-stage paint.

I think he is talking about the clear 3M type stuff that sticks on. There are several brand names and thickness. It is very prevelant in the motorhome industry, and is used on the entire front of new motorhomes to avoid or lessen rock and bug damage.

I've seen it used on autos several times in high rock damage areas to protect the paint.

My experience with it on a motorhome makes me say don't do it. The surface of the material (Diamond shield) in my case is very soft and rubbery to the touch. It scratches easily if you try to scrub a dried bug before it has soaked and softened enough. The scratches are near impossible to remove without machine buffing using the proper compound. The material turns brittle after long (3-4 years) exposure to the sun. This can cause yellowing of the material or spiderweb cracks. Also once a rock "dings" the material and makes a small penetration, an air bubble will start to develop around the pucture. The bubble will remain unless you do a spot repair/replace due to dirt and grit getting in.

It's a nice looking product when new and is a good idea. The actual service of it varies according to use and care. Myself, I wouldn't cover an entire auto with it, but to each their own.

One warning. If you do use this, wait until the vehicle is 5-6 months old and the paint is fully cured and out-gassed. If not when you go to peel it off for replacement/repair, or because you decided against it, The paint will peel off in large chunks here and there along with the film. I know this for a fact, been there and repainted the front of my motorhome because of it.

Parker...

And that clear film stuff as well... you're spot on.

Many of the Grand Cherokee SRT8 guys had the 3M clear bra applied to the front clip and found later it left permanet marks in the clear coat where the material started and ended.

They had to carefully wet sand the clear coat and buff or respray depending on the severity.

I think it's better to allow nature to take its course.

I had this on my STI and I would never touch a sheet of it to another vehicle I own ever again, what a total nightmare. Looks great the first year or so and then it is in no way worth it.

In the order on how I'm going after my mods after our work shutdown at the end of June

http://www.quadratec.com/products/92044_0008.htm - to air up after trailing
http://www.quadratec.com/products/16502_4011_07.htm - lift
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....2RWL&tab=Sizes - 35's
http://www.quadratec.com/products/14141_0002_07.htm - secure my stuff when topless
http://www.quadratec.com/products/12049_201X_PG.htm - tire carrier

These are things I had planned for my 12' Arctic this year, before I ordered my new 10a in Feb. In September I plan on taking the bride to Sedona for a some vacation after the work deal. Have 14 trails to review and narrow down on out there.
