I took the big ole Sahara on a road trip this weekend. It really is comfortable on the highway and it was getting 20mpg... not too bad considering my BMW only got 23. I found a discover trail looking for a salmon hatchery and got a good taste of the 4wd. I was quite happy. Jeeps are pretty awesome outta the box

The four speed auto is an abomination for sure. The 10k came largely from the fact I got a decked out '11 Sahara vs a plain old '12 JKU...

I am going to run some more trails before I worry too much about it...

Why 2mpg matters

I think it's interesting how we dismiss a difference of 2-3 mpg. In this era of $4/gal if you drive 15,000 miles a year then even a 2mpg difference of 20mpg versus 22mpg means:

15,000/20mpg= 750gal = $3000
15,000/22mpg= 682gal = $2727

That's almost $300 year

Or to put it another way... that's a set of Duratecs tires every 3 years

Regardless of which you choose....both of these engines struggle to move this Brick around....this vehicle needs a V8 or diesel....

$5k for the motor and a new Jeep that no one else had.

Unless you bought a new leftover?

The new V6 is peppy and feels much faster in my parents Grand Cherokee then my JKU. However, I did come from a modded Vette so I imagine just about everything feels slow.

The new engine does like higher RPM's though and doesn't feel very torquey (new word alert) down low.

One thing i've noticed is that it doesn't seem to matter which year, what color, what size tires or lift, soft or hard top, everyone I see driving a Wrangler seems happy.

Couldn't have said it better. Both are barely adequate, neither is great. At 70 mph into a little headwind they are both gutless. Enjoy them for what they are. Probably the most unique vehicle you can buy.

"gutless" at 70???? The 2012s are not gutless at all at 70. You really need to drive a 2012 on a highway. For a wrangler, the highway performance was very good, far better than my previous 08 rubicon.

All JKs are great Jeeps , but the 2012 is Chryslers best Jeep. All cars, trucks and (yes, Jeeps) get better with time, the Jk is no exception.

Lol I know you have Tom, you have made it quite clear on this forum, that your not impressed with Chryslers new aluminum block 3.6 liter engine.

Your going to take it to your grave with you ,or til you buy your next Jeep.

The 3.6 is not gutless at 70. That is just not true.

I have an 11 and a 12. Neither is impressive at highway speeds. Adequate in most cases, but "very good", not even close. Of the roughly 20 vehicles I have owned over the years it's definitively not in the top 10. It's a 4300 pound brick on wheels. I'm not saying the engine is a dog, just saying that in this application I'm not impressed. I'm glad your happy with yours, I am happy as well, just not blown away.

I just don't really even think about driving mine over 70, because it's not geometrically designed to do that aside from any power-plant issues. Mine gets up to 70 really easily even uphill so far. I'm just not going much beyond that.

Mine pulls fine in 5th gear (6spd, 3.21's) but in 6th above 60mph, a slight hill, breeze, anything I have to downshift. If there is even a slight incline the speedometer just drops.

Just took delivery this afternoon. Directly from an '11 auto Rubi into '12 auto Rubi. WOW. Two hour jaunt since then. Without question the difference is night and day. There is no escaping it. Number of observations:

- 100% the steering wheel is thinner than the '11
- 100% the stereo in the '12 is betther
- 100% the seats are better in the '12 you can feel a lumbar support of sorts

- the seat belt buckle feels thinner/cheaper on the '12
- key fob on the '12 feels lighter/ flimsier
- front end on the '12 is definitely lighter (lighter engine obviously)
not sure about this aspect yet as the tires are still fresh and it's still wondering, but when you hit the gas it doesn't track like the heavier '11
- dead quite in all respects than the '11 engine and even door unlocking

- power and transmission. No questions. Ridiculous difference and what it is all about. To power off the line and keeping going on and on and on...

Overall and this is from 2 hours before trade to 2 hours with trade, it may be not as well built or they scrimped on, more likely shaved things down, the thinner seat belt buckle, thinner steering wheel, lighter less robust key fob, things like that. The whole vehicle doesn't feel as robust or as solid as the '11, thicker/heavier metal plastics etc. This I can feel definitely overall.

But that being the point from '11 immediately into '12 I'm sure it will take minimal time getting used to. The engine and transmission is a god send. Even there it doesn't sound as 'cool' as the '11 when hitting the gas. Maybe because it's so quite inside, but it sounds like a high pitched sewing machine. Hopefully it doesn't sound like that outside regardless, the thing moves on command and keeps going. Head turner guaranteed.

All I can say is anyone on the fence. Go for it. I got the '11 deeply discounted end last year and after a month or two found the transmission to be a real issue for me. I started the hunt and math to see how to get into a '12 -- this Sept. or Oct. or Nov. last year. Of course several know it all know nothing scoffed at the notion that I'd lose my shirt. As did several dealers at the time. After months of digging and poking prodding investigating I hit pay dirt. With my own dealer. Cost me nothing at the end of the day. As if I walked into the dealer today and bought a brand new '12 auto Rubi at 1000 dollars below invoice, and the '11 I drove for free for 8 months. Those things hold their value like nothing else. When I started the BB trade in was 30,000 today it's 29900. That's the price I paid! 8 months ago! Anyway special set of circumstances right time right hour right month etc. Point is it can be done. I'd have gone 3000 loss to do this and certainly wouldn't stick a SuperCharger into it for 5000+ In fact I'm all hot and ready and got a new exhaust and CAI in the shopping basket, before I picked it up today. I don't even know if I need or want it. 2 door '12 auto solves all the problems for me.

Even convinced the sales lady to trade in her '11 after our original test drive 60 days ago. Interestingly enough I mentioned the "tick" and she knew about it but no specifics. 60 days ago didn't know what the hell I was talking about.

Otherwise couldn't be happier. Been knawing at me for 8 months and now it's done. This feels like my jeep, the other one didn't. When you're not happy even in the slightest with a jeep for whatever reason, you must remedy it.

+1

HP sells cars, torque wins races, climbs rocks, and tows, etc. There is only so much you can get out of a 6 cyl. engine.

I just bought my 2009 Jeep JK "X" Auto 3.73 a month ago.
It rides great, and it is a Jeep, a base model, and I am still thrilled to own a Jeep.
How fast on the highway do I really need to go?
If I have the need for speed, I'll drive my Porsche, but in the meantime I love tooling around town in my Detonator Yellow Jeep X, and I never have to worry about where to park it, like I do with the Porsche. I just get in and go. It's a Jeep thing, and now I understand.

2012 2 door 6 speed with 3.73 gears = 0 to 60 in 6.6 secs, that's only one second slower than my lightly modded 300C. The new Jeep definately has grunt and is more than sufficient for this vehicle!

I have a 2012 Rubi with 4.10. It is peppy enough, though not exactly like my V8 4Runner. Still, it is quick enough and holding 75 mph is no issue. I enjoy the Jeep...no complaints.

It's hard to compare drag racing unless it's a Rubi manual to a Rubi Manual. About the only two models without one being upgrades where the only difference is the motor. Not to mention the guy in the 11 was a little biased and called it a car. I wouldn't go no where for him either if I was the Jeep lol. He was more worried about talking to the video then the race and calling it a car. He must hate kittens. Really though, he could have been more honest and still lost but it was obvious in the video is was trying to show the 2012 off and dog the 2011. A drag race of course will also show off the 2012's advantage at high rpm's. A drag race is the only place you will ever hardly see over 4K rpm's

But without knowing what tranny each have then we can't really compare. The Stock 2011 non rubi has manual is 3.21 gears while stock 2012 is 3.73. The gearing gives the 2012 an advantage and the Autos are geared different to begin with. Really, stock with no upgrades the only models that can be compared is the 2011 Rubi manual with 4.10 gears to the 2012 Rubi manual with 4.10 gears. But the 2012 is going to have an advantage

But the pre-2011 has a chance with a little work. They were just under geared. The 2012 doesn't have a huge hp increase as many stated until after 4K RPM's. Under that, the biggest advatage to the 2012 is more the gears, either in the diff's or the tranny. I would put my re-geared 2010 JK up against any 2012 JKU lol

30 hp more wouldn't be worth the investment we have in this project. The target is something that will really make you think about that expensive Hemi conversion.

x2. Would love to hear even a rough guess. And I'm curious what the product is going to be, a kit of some sort?
