I'm new here but after banging my head around last night I tried to figure out how to plug my accessories in to charge without draining the battery on my JKU 2013. The center counsel 12 volt power adaptor is always hot even with ignition off. Final simple solution: 1 dual USB 12 volt adaptor (without a light) (I used Verizon Model BULLETYPC - DC201210, 1 USB IPHONE CABLE, 1 micro USB for blue tooth charging. Assuming you take your IPOD, IPHONE, blue tooth headset out to use when you aren't driving your JEEP and you leave the cables in, this works very well! Hope this helps!
Alright so to clarify. I don't leave the phone or the bluetooth plugged in 24/7 and so it is that my older charging cables were of the full blown light up Verizon Wireless type. I.E. walk away with the phone and unnecessary lights are still on in the center console. Remember, this is the newest vehicle I have ever bought, i.e. 3 days old now. The others were a bit old (ok the batteries were a bit old). 97 Grand TSI, 95 Cherokee, 99 Cherokee, 03 Rubi, 04 Grand Laredo, and 98 Wrangler, and finally '13 JKU Sport. Odd order, but I finally got exactly what fit the bill for the fam! Couldn't stay away!
Obviously by my post then, I am not mechanically inclined. Where can the swap be done? Ideally, I would like the console to switch on and off with the ignition and not the power outlet on the dash. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.
Terrabit, I was only commenting on the 12 V outlet in the console. I believe the USB that is in the console switches off with the ignition. If a USB charging adaptor is plugged into the 12 V outlet that is in the console on my '13 JKU, it will stay hot; however, the USB only plug in the console does not seem to stay hot all the time. Hope this helps.
Similar question to the OP. I have a tablet dash unit that I need to power. I have a lockbox for the tablet, but don't plan on removing it everywhere I go. My plan was a cigarette lighter USB car charger I could hide in the console of my 2012 and running wire under carpet up behind the stereo.
I don't like the idea of it always hot 12v pushing power to a charged tablet, but I also don't want the look of wires hanging out of the dash port. I have a remote starter sacking battery already and don't want to add to the problem. Having the radio and dome light on while I was working on it was enough to kill it this weekend.
Is it easier to tap a new power wire or somehow switch the console cigarette lighter port to only be on with the key? The USB port alone isn't enough power. Thanks
