Angry 18 year Chrysler salesman never heard of Tread Lightly

I just had a call from a salesman from a Chrysler/Jeep dealer, and when I told him I was waiting for my Tread Lightly membership certificate, he did not know anything about TL. I have been referred to him by more than one person, and I understand he has been selling there for 18 years. Is he being honest with me, or don't many use that program? Have I wasted my $$ joining TL? I'm too far from Chicago to buy from Pat!!

I agree...the sales mgr said the same thing, but then he gave me 2% under on my order. They still like to play games, wish it was easier, but I got a fair price, not the best, but fair, I guess.

My salesman didn't know about TL either. That dealership did seem to like to play games though? Ask him if they accept the Chrysler Associate Rewards program. Basically TL makes you qualify for that. My salesman ask the guy in the "Tower" (manager guy) and they confirmed that they did accept TL. Every dealership does not HAVE to accept the program, so I would make sure yours does before signing anything.

There is no reason the salesman needs to know about "Tread Lightly." There is no such thing as a "TL discount." The salesman will know about the Chrysler Affiliate Rewards program. The problem is not the salesman, it's the general misconception here that there is a "TL discount" of some sort.

A Tread Lightly membership, as well as employment by a very long list of other Chrysler suppliers and affiliated companies, makes you eligible for the Affiliate program's 1% below invoice price. You bring in a Chrysler control number, and proof of eligibility (i.e. TL membership letter) and you get the discount.....

He knows all about TL. If he is acting like he doesn't then he would be a person I would choose not to do business with. Obviously he only cares about his numbers and not you. Find another salesman to deal with and let them know why you choose not to deal with him.

Sorry I have to disagree all salesman from old to new know about all the programs even if it is not directly connected with Chrysler. I know I sold Chrysler products for 10 years.

My point is, there is no such thing as the 'Tread Lightly program.' Referring to the 'Affiliate Rewards' or 'Friends and Family' programs as 'TL' just confuses things. No reason a salesman should know all the different employment and membership situations that qualify for the Affiliate Rewards program through Chrysler. My dealer was surprised to find that TL membership qualified, but he sure knew all about the AR program. I had absolutely no resistance to using it. As a matter of fact, the dealer loved using the program.

If I recall, the Tread Lightly association with the Chrysler program only began in 2010 or so. Please correct me if I'm wrong there.

Here's how the Tread Lightly website puts it:

x2 - I emailed 10 dealerships throughout VA referencing the Chrysler Affiliate Rewards program and received quotes from 1% below invoice to 3%+ below invoice.

My experience with most car dealers is that they have very little knowledge of their products and will do the minimum amount of work to get the sale, with the exception of the Land Rover dealer I pruchased my 09 LR3 from. The Jeep dealer in the next town over from me already irritated me by treating me like I was an idiot, even though I knew his product better that he did.
The bottom line is the best defense is a good offense, which is being a prepared and informed customer and shop around. One way I prepared was to join wrangler forum and gleen knowledge from people a lot more experienced than I in all matters Wrangler. Everyone here rocks!~ (no pun intended!)

I agree, that's why I was suprised that a guy who supposidely had been there a long time claimed he knew nothing about it. I do know the average car salesperson doesn't stay at one dealer very long, and each dealer sells so many different models. The first thing they want is to go on a test drive, then go to their desk and the guy in the "tower" makes all the decisions. HATE buying cars!!
