1st JK Project: Carpet Removal/Safari Top/Bed Liner/Subwoofer

Hi there. This is my first post, and I am embarking on my first JK project ever (09 Wrangler Sahara 2dr) - actually, I have NEVER worked on a vehicle. With this information you are quite correct in assuming I am totally winging it.

I've been reading the forums for a few weeks, and it seems that this project is okay for a beginner, but I want to get some feedback from the more experienced Jeep owners out there, and I have a few specific questions.

Ultimately, I want a Safari Soft Top and a weatherproof bed liner floor (DIY, Herculiner, etc.). I viewed the photos of some Herculiner floors, here on the forum, and it looks pretty good. Now here's what I've done so far: bought the Safari Top, removed the Rear Seat, and most of the carpeting. I have access to good tools, and even a couple folks who know how to use them.

First question: On the rear side panels (behind the roll bar and in front of the inner wheelhouse) there are holes (shaped like rounded rectangles) about 2.5" wide & 6.5" long - see attached photos. They are located right below the rear side windows. Once the Safari top goes on..there won't be windows, and I am worried that these holes will get flooded in rain/weather. Not really interested in that happening. I'd like to cover them. Has anyone confronted this issue before? Any suggestions? Any idea what they're there for?

2nd question: I'm concerned the tire jack, crow bar, etc. is going to get rusted up, etc if I keep it in its storage area in front of the tailgate. Do you know of an alternate mounting area? Or a weatherproof cover that can go over its current location?

3rd question: What's the best way to protect the back of the front seats during stormy weather (remember it'll just have a safari top)? Windjammer?

4th question: Is the OE subwoofer weather resistant? OK just to leave it at its current location near the right side inner wheelhouse? One alternate location I thought of was under one of the front seats - anybody tried this?

Hey, I just wanted to say that i herculined my 91 YJ and I freakin love it! It is great! Looks awesome and the texture is perfect! and it's really cheap compared to others! I have two 55 willys that i am restoring now, and I plan on herculining those too! Just wanted to tell you the experience that i have had with it is that it is a great product!

Glad to hear it worked out for you. I'm looking through the forums, etc. to make a final decision on the liner. Also looking at Raptor and Monstaliner.

Hey guy- welcome to the forum! We (Briana and I) just herculined her tub a few weeks ago. It stinks (literally) some days, but makes life easier on us. We live and work at a horse farm, so hair, crap (again, literally), mud, and dirt are our day to day, not to mention water, soda, McDonald's fries (often the worst to evict), etc. Being able to literally hose out the interior and leave it sit and dry itself out with no worries of rust is nice.
The texture is rather rough on bare feet and dog feet, so we kept the cargo liner in the back- also good for carrying more delicate items.
Also, if you go Herculiner, plan at LEAST a whole day for it. Start your prep either the night before, or EARLY in the AM, or you'll need 2 days. The seats are a BITCH to get out- if you have access to power/air tools to get them out, you'll be much the wiser than I was- hand tools are a pain! Should have done it at home, but I did it here at the barn- derp!

As for top options, the Bikini tops (even the safari) will only keep out so much water. Running the Duster (cargo cover) and Wraparound Windjammer (the better of the 2- requires the soundbar cap and costs more, but keeps out a fair bit more wind, rain, dust, etc.) is a good idea. This is my current top setup, and I'm liking it so far. A BIT of buffeting if you have it all on and roll down a window, but nothing awful. It's relatively easy to put on (if it's above 50 degrees out- below that, find a friend or forget it- TRUST ME! And the first time you put it on, wait until it's HOT out [above 72 degrees, as they recommend] or plan on a tough time).

As for the subwoofer, they are SUPPOSEDLY marine grade. Worst case, it's under your 3/36K warranty, so talk to your dealership about their thoughts on that one- if they won't cover it, you can rock it 'til it blows, then get a marine rated sub from Crutchfield. Or just remove the dang thing

Anyway, best of luck. Any questions/comments/concerns you have, feel free to post them up- there is a lot of good info out there, so run a search and see what you find. AND REMEMBER TO WAVE! Mark W.

Hey thanks Mark! I appreciate your suggestions.

So far I have all of the carpet out accept in front of the driver seat. The front passenger seat is out as well as the right side trim pieces. Now I'm just popping the tabs for the wiring harnesses to get them out of the way.

My impression is that the JK is a little fussier with this bed liner job. I'm also hoping that removing the center console is not going to be a huge fuss. I'd like to finish this up this week, but who knows...

Welcome! And... sounds like a fun project! That'll be sweet...

Worst case, I can suggest coating your jack with a layer of WD40 once every couple months. It stands for "Water Displacement formula number 40". Works great for keeping moisture off the metal. But, you have to do it every so often or it all washes away and begins to rust up. Its great inside of things such as jack mechanisms where you really cannot get in there to coat it good with anything. White lithium grease is always a good option to spread over it as well. Just a really thin layer on the metal parts 'el do...

I was also thinking of maybe the rubberized coatings. Heck, maybe just "undercoat" your jack

As for the center console, get the seats out, and use a hammer and chisel to get the t-case shifter off- it'll be a PAIN. The gear knob (if it's 6-speed) will just pull off.

Also, a point of advice- grab a roll of electrical tape, and wrap up the harnesses that have exposed bits of wire- cheap insurance! Mark W.

Okay - the Raptor Liner kit arrived yesterday. Some forum posts indicate that it is hard to tell if the kit you receive will have a spray gun included or not - my kit arrived with the spray gun in a separate box. So it looks like I'm good to go. Now, I need to remove the seatbelts, the left side trim, driver seat and the center console. This is my daily driver, so I might have to wait...grrrr

Update:
The passenger seatbelts are now out, and the center console is ready to come out...just need to loosen the e-brake bolts and remove the 4wd shifter knob.

By the way, I've read a few posts with folks having trouble removing the rear seatbelts. It was no big deal at all. Just be sure to use the appropriate size torx bit, etc. and it will be no problem.

This looks like it will be the week, when I finally get the raptor liner sprayed on - I hope.

I wish I had known about Raptorliner a week ago. Friday morning I just ordered a Herculiner kit. Let me know how the spraying goes and I might just have to take mine back. Dont know how I like the roll on liner.

Yeah, I thought about Herculiner, but when I saw some of the really good raptor liner results, I decided that was the way to go. I suppose each liner is a little different, so it's all about finding the one that suits your needs/preferences the most. There are some great raptor liner photos on this thread:

Here are some quick photos I took of liner today - about 3 hours after I sprayed the last coat. (So-so quality from the phone camera..will try to post better images soon).

Sooo glad I went with the spray-in Raptor liner - I think I made the best choice there.

Thanks fellas!

The texture? Hmmm...well, it's not abrasive in any way so you can run your hand along it - it feels like hard plastic. It's shiny too..not like the shine from your clear coat, but it definitely has a gleaming surface.

Thats there all over in the tub in the JK's. Dont know waht exactly it is..

Thanks for the kind words, folks! It took a lot of prep work, but the raptor sprays on very easily once all the hard work is done.

Yeah, that's the area under the rear seat...like that for all the JKs.

For me, I just like having an easy-to-clean surface that will be low maintenance.

Johnny Dollar, did you ever find something to plug the 2.5" wide & 6.5" long holes on the rear side panels, or what they're called for that matter? I would like to keep mine covered also.

That material is for road noise attenuation (reduction), without it would sound you were in a oil drum rolling down the road! Some stainless kitchen sinks use the same principle to reduce the "tub" noise when water runs on the surface. Look under the counter and you should see small black rubber or tark like pads on the bottom....amazing amount of trivial stuff in this posting (it's raining here!)

I never found out more about those holes despite my research efforts. One person suggested to me that they may have served a purpose during fabrication of the vehicle at the factory.

I've been riding without the windows for about a month now - just with the factory top in "safari style" mode. From that I can tell you that despite being in some very heavy, wind-driving summer thunderstorms and rain showers, virtually no moisture has gone in those spaces. For now - seems like a non-issue for me.

T40 is a torx bit tool. T = Torx 40 = the size of the bit. the JK jeep loves torx bolts for sure. if you ever plan to take some things apart you will need a set of these.

for the main questions. my stock JK subwoofer did in fact get wet when i had a leak and when i decided to take my top off between rain storms. it worked fine and like mentioned above it is supposed to be marine grade. so you should be good to go for awhile and if not take it to the dealer. tell them you had the top down and it rained... its covered under your 3/36 warrenty. my dealer told me they would replace mine if it didnt work from getting rained on, but every dealer will react differently.

BTW GREAT JOB on the liner!! it looks like you took your time and made sure it was a clean job.
