1st post, but I've been lurking here and learning a ton. thx !

looking to purchase an unlimited for the wife. We are in southern cal, so we don't have any severe weather conditions to deal with and we will only be 4wheeling in snow up in the mountains during winter.

we settled on a white Altitude edition with auto and 430n/navi as the only option added. I've considered adding 3.73 and trac-lok, but that means ordering one. The dealer has what we are looking for (less the 3.73 and trac-lok) for MSRP $39,085. Pics below

any input would be much appreciated.

thx again !

welcome to JCC and congrats on your purchase. where did you purchase the jeep from?

on a side note, I had 3.21 on my previous jk. Its very doable but offroad duties are horrendous especially with the bigger tires I had at the time.

2012 jku 3.21 manual, 32" tires... 40mph on 6th, you'll have to downshift. It will hold gear at 70mph but not that's it.
2014 jku 3.71 manual, 32" tires... 40mph on 6th is doable all the way to highway speeds.

Welcome.

If you're not going to get bigger tires or do any heave 4 wheeling you should be fine with 3.21

I'd say if you're leaving it at stock tire size you'll be fine with 3.21... on the other hand if you plan on going bigger than 33-34" tires you'll probably want to regear lower than 3.73 anyways so you're still better to just save your money on 3.73 and get the 3.21. IMO 3.73 are only worth the extra cost if you plan on staying around 33-34" tires

Looks nice. Sounds like a fair price. Get what you want and just know in a month or so you will see one 200.00 more or less than what you paid. Don't let it worry you in the least as it has happened to practically all of us. Congrats amd welcome to the club. Mine came with 3.73 because I got max tow package, but I already knew I was getting Duratracs in whatever size they are to match the stock spare (i know its kinda faux pau to do that, but it's mine) so I can't comment on the 3.21's, but knew I woulda been fine either way as my DD with only light trail use some day.

Thx guys. But haven't purchased it yet. :)

The msrp is 39k.. We will be getting it for little over $36k. Looks like the altitude has less negotiation room. If I am wrong, please advise.

I will leave the wheels as-is for few years while the wifey is driving it. Plan is to lift it and put in new gears (along with lockers) for the bigger tires for off-roading when I take over later. :happyyes:

Nice looking jeep sir.

My 0.02 I have the 3.21. I didn't know what was what when I bought my 14jku. It does what I need it to. I'm headed to TN tomorrow for white water rafting and I'll find some trails while I'm there.
So far I got no complaints but I don't live on the edge either ;)
Listen to these guys I can for SURE see where a 35 would drown her too gears. But I'm hoping the jump to 33 will be minimal power drain.
Anyway welcome to the boards nice jeep.

I am very partial to the Altitude edition considering I own one, however I would be really leery about owning one with the 3.21 gearing ratio if you are planning on a lift and bigger tires.

What year is that? I would think you could do better on the price. I would also recommend the 3.73 gears, I think you may regret the higher ratio. I have 4.10s and think they may be a bit too low for daily driving. But I don't think I would change it.

I see most recommend the 3.73, (which is what I prefer also)
However, there are no white Altitude edition with 3.73 near here. Actually, I did find one, but it has many other option I don't want/need and raises the msrp by $3k.

Since we won't be using it to crawl on rocks anytime soon.. and no plans to lift or put on bigger tires for several years, I thought I would just get one in stock with 3.21.

I am leery of ordering one at this time since it's getting close to 2015 production year. My wife loves the altitude with white exterior with piano black trims inside and out, as well as the glossed out 18s. Happy wife happy life.

Would I run into any problems getting my exact spec if I ordered today ?

Thx again for all the help guys (even tho this is more of a mall-crawler for now)

Btw, the price I am getting is suppose to be under invoice.

If you plan on staying with stock tires for the foreseeable future and don't plan on any really technical wheeling get the Jeep with everything else you want and 3.21 gears, gearing is minor in the big picture of things... It can be changed at any time and if you're going over 33" tires in the future you'll probably want gearing lower gearing than 3.73 anyways

Welcome Carlitos..

Nice looking rig. Since you eventually plan to re gear with lockers have you considered just getting a Rubicon now ? Although it would cost a little more you won't have to re gear unless you want, and you'll have lockers and a better transfer case....but you already know that.

Your wife likes the Altitude, but maybe she would like a Rubi just as much...

I'm also running 3.21s due to the fact I got amazing deal on it. I've upgraded to 33s and it's not horrible, but I drive my jeep like a blind grandma. I have the desire to upgrade to 3.73 purely because thats what everyone says, but not performance of the jeep. I'm sure once I put more weight on it that will change.
