I think we made a wise choice just bought a 2014 JKU Rubicon went with the 3.73 gears instead of the optional 4.10's
We will be driving 80% of the time on paved highway.
So far combined driving been averaging 20 mpg and still breaking it in just at 1000 miles
Anyone else getting the same or better?
Rubicon is completely stock at this time I have ordered the Banks stinger package for even better fuel economy and sound
2104 JKU Sport I'm at about 2400 miles and my average started at like 18.5. The ECO light has helped me kinda train my acceleration. Now I'm reading 21.3! Obviously a jeep isn't the vehicle to have for getting good gas mileage but its about a 6 mpg increase over my old TJ!
I average 16 with my 14 Sport S with stock rims and 32" MTR Kevlars. It was 17-18 with the stock tires. My old taurus got 12 so I am still coming out ahead.
So far we've averaged about 17.5MPG with the willy's. I have kind of a heavy foot, but I've been trying to dial it back. About to get my 5.9L ZJ gas burner back on the road and that thing can average 15 on a good day.
Make sure you're doing the calculations by hand, not relying on the EVIC...they're notoriously wrong. Mine claims I'm getting around 24 mpg when it's usually about 21.5...almost all highway, these days.
the EVIC takes time to learn. It took my willys about 4-5 full tanks of fuel to get to a closer estimate on mpg. its pretty much on par with my fuel apps. most recent numbers....
willys EVIC.
1434 miles
308.4 distance 18.7 MPG
58 dte
Getting around the same as well and one reason we upgraded. I hand calc at every fill up with an app. Last tank on the willy was 20.1 which included some off pavement and a short 4lo jaunt. EVIC "Average" said 20.2.
Also have to check your actual mileage as opposed to what the odometer says...
I have a 2014 with manual trans and 3.73 gears with 255/80-17 ST-Maxx tires (33" skinnies). I'm getting around 18-19mpg on average with mostly slow around-town driving. On longer rural highway trips it goes up to 22 on average; I had one long stretch where I got an honest 23.93 (55 mph and almost no wind).
On the interstate it drops due to the lack of aerodynamics. Speed kills mpgs...
I got better mileage with the stock tires. Lighter and less rolling resistance.
20 MPG is great mileage for a Rubi. Enjoy while you have it. Fuel economy doesn't always get better with age, for instance mine went down once the ECU figured out my evil ways.
20+ mpg IS possible under IDEAL conditions. Unfortunately, those ideal conditions seldom continue with any regularity. I can repeatedly get the same mileage on my Rubicon 10A even with 4.10 gearing IF I don't have too many stop and go's such as stop signs and traffic lights. No headwind at all and I drive below 55/mph. I also can't spend time with the engine idling, and during my drives there are no fast accelerations and NO uphill climbs. Even on SLIGHT uphill climbs I can see my mpg go way down. In addition to the factory calculator, I have a scan gauge where I can see my mileage "real time" as well as get another computation "opinion" of mpg. However, all the driving I do is not under the above conditions.... so, as the expression goes, my mileage will vary. For any driving conditions only the old reliable manual calculations of miles driven & fuel used give actual mpg values.
Typically 17-19 around town. On way back from Ouray to chicago. Got 23 @ 67 mpg. Kept the Rpms at 2k. Took a little longer but better for mpg and Rpms.
According to the EVIC on my Willys JKU I'm getting 15.8, no idea how accurate that is but since I only commute 3 miles a day I'm not too worried about it.
Thank you all for your responses I really appreciate it. The new 3.6 over the 4.0 that I had in my last 2005 Rubicon it was equipped with a 6 speed manual only mods besides winch and bumper I added a Banks intake and exhaust with that Jeep I got 14 MPG in city and 17 MPG highway.
We all know we don't purchase a Wrangler for fuel economy, but for all around fun and go anywhere thru any conditions. As a daily driver getting 20+ MPG over 14 to 17
at almost $4.00 a gallon gives us all more $$$ to spend on other mods makes me Happy
Just drove my 14 JKU Sport with 4.10's out to Harrisonburg,VA. from northern VA. (2 hour trip through the mountains) Got 20 MPG on the highway with 4 people in the car and a lot of luggage. On the return trip, 3 people in the car and no luggage I got 23.5 according to EVIC. I was drafting semi's on the return trip and kept my speed between 65 and 70 mph. No cruise control and a lot of feathering of the gas pedal.
Regularly get 19.5 with 4:10s, I don't gave a heavy foot and really know how to drive. I have all highway trip next week so I'm curious what I'll get there, my guess is 21ish
I always put quality fuel in and hand calculate it. I've also found that sonoco gas tanks my mpg to 17
I went from a stock 2014 JKU to a 3.5" AEV lift with 35x12.50R18 Nittos. Went from averaging 18-19 mpg to 16-18 around town.
I do notice that the mpgs go down when my wife drives it...probably something to do with treating the accelerator like an on/off switch...I keep telling her we are making the payments but she keeps driving it like she stole it
