20" or smaller?

I recently caught a 2009 jk with 20" rockstar rims which look pretty good. I always liked the look of a bigger tire smaller rim on jeeps. Any rim and tire set ups or recommendations on what would look and perform good?

My brother is running the 20in rockstars too. I think its a perfect size for a JK!

I just ordered the Fuel Anza wheels in a 17" size, and a set of IROC ND tires. Works for me.

Mallcrawler = 20's, unless you have huge tires
All others = 17's

Most everyone here are going to say 20" wheels aren't for jeeps. Honestly, I think they look the best. Though you have to think of your situation. I have a friend that runs a 35x12.50-20 toyo m/t. The look is awesome, not a bad ride but the sidewall is small. If you need something that you'll be able to air down and you don't want to run a 38-40" tire then 20" wheel might not be the way to go. If the jeep is 95% on road then 20" wheel would be okay (speaking relative to a 35" x 20" combo)

I want the 20" wheel but also only want to run a 35" tire. The wheels I'm going with spyderlocks, do not recommend running a 20" wheel without going to a 38" tire. I don't want to do a 17" wheel cause I think it looks too small...and that's what the jeep came with 17". So I'm doing a happy medium and going with an 18" spyderlock. I can run a 35" tire but can only air down to 12psi....which I might do once.

Oh no...

What size tire do you have even? If you are running 40's they will look fine. If not...

Tdow, get what you want/like. I don't think you can't fit anything smaller than 15" wheel. JMO.
This has been stated a billion times, stock Rubicon sidewall ~7.5" & 35 on 20 ~7.5".

Really that's what you are saying , so I guess you think 33s on 17s is not good either then or better yet any tire under 33 on a 17

I just look at your build thread and you run 295/70/17 and you have the nerve to talk about someone else's choice when you are not running a proper tire setup

Jaker 35's and 20's don't look the same as 33's (my tire is bigger than standard 33) and 17's no matter what you want to say. And I'm not talking about proper, I'm talking aesthetics. If he likes the look go for it...Obviously you do. Plus this isn't his choice...he bought it that way. Also, I bought 17's because I plan to move up in tire size and don't want to keep changing rim size. I'm not a fan on 15's and 35's or 37's. I'm somewhere in the middle.

Yes, I understand that there is ABOUT the same amount of sidewall but it's in a small package. When you have 35's with that amount of sidewall it looks different.

I like the 20in rims but I'm currently running 33s and I don't like how small the side wall looks I like the idea of the 18in wheel thanks

Don't listen to people like this. I know plenty of people with 20's on their Jeeps or Trucks that take them out and abuse them. If you rock crawl 90% of the time then that is a different story.

It seems if you don't conform to what everyone else does then you are a Mallcrawler. 99% of people on here will give you a hard time about individualizing your Jeep if you like 20" wheels, they think you should follow them like sheep. Times have changed and 20 inch wheels look perfect on a JK.

If you have any thoughts about 20's then get them/keep them, otherwise you will get the 17's and wish you had the 20's.

Newsflash...He is asking for our opinion. Look at the original post.

The OP wanted opinions (whether for or against). In fact, Op says he likes the look of bigger tire and smaller rim. No one has told him not to keep the rims if he likes them. If you are going to ask for opinions, you are going to have people on both sides.

People have issues with reading comprehension anymore. They read what they want to read instead of what is actually asked for. Drives me nutz at work.

In my opinion Jeeps look "right" when their wheel to tire size ratio stays under 50%... i.e. 33" and larger tires look right on a 15" rim. 35" and larger tires look right on a 17" rim, etc.

But that's just based on my preference. I could see why people would prefer the ratio the other way around because it's easier to balance a lower profile tire and results in better road manners.

its all in what you really want. personally no 4x4 should run a 20'' with anything less than a 37'' tire. for a jeep i think it souldnt be over 18'' wheels. and only a 37+ should have a 18'' wheel, anything less should stay @ 17'' or less.im sure some will disagree with me

Oh so it's ok for you to give your opinion and not ok for me to give mine? My opinion was to not listen to people who call 20's Mall Crawlers and that if he likes 20's to stay with them. And don't insult my intelligence and say I have issues with reading. You should look at your spelling, it is spelled nuts not nutz...

That is good to know! I didn't realize that the sidewalls between the two were equal!! Again to the OP, if like the 20's then stick with them.

Rock crawlers prefer more sidewall. I assume to add side grip and possibly protect rims. Therefore, when I see 20s I think NOT a rock crawler, not necessarily a mall crawler though. Just NOT a rock crawler.

It's your Jeep and your money, do what you want.
