Battery cables. The best way to test them is with a voltage drop test, but many times by the time you have dug down to the cables to do that it's just as easy to just replace them. Basically, you'll use a voltmeter to test the resistance of the cable under load. Put the + lead of the DVOM on the + end of the cables and crank the engines. The reading on the meter should be less than .5V.

next time that happens, if you have auto tranny, pop in into N and then try to give it a go. If that's the case you could have a common grounding issue. search for it.

The neutral/park/clutch safety switch was another thing I thought of, but on a four year old vehicle it shouldn't be worn out yet. Definitely a possibility.

I just bought my '07 'X' with standard trans today, and after a dozen or so starts it is doing the same thing. Sometimes a clicking sound, sometimes nothing. The last couple times it seemed as though if I held the key in the start position for a few seconds it cranks normally.
Cleaned the batt terminals and still doing it.
Clutch is fully depressed.
Tracing the ground strap is a good idea then?

If it clicks, have someone tap the starter with a rubber mallet. If that allows it to start, it's likely the starter solenoid. (it's the lump on the side of the starter, common problem when you hear clicking).

Part bolts to starter, about $30

WCM is the wireless control module it reads the code from the key when the key is placed into the ignition. At times the jeep would start ok and other times when the key was put in only the dash would light up no engine crank I would have to remove the key several times reinsert it and then it would start. When the WCM is replaced your keys need to be reprogrammed to the new unit. Jeep has a service bulletin out on problem number 08-007-08 Rev.A No engine crank or no engine start due to electronic lockup of the WCM.

Thanks, built4rock, and all the others who have responded thus far. This WCM info should save the dealer a lot of troubleshooting hassles, and save me a lot of back-and-forth to the shop.
Cheers!

I would like to know if the dealer had any luck with the WCM information. My Jeep has done that several times (the clicking noise). I have replaced the starter , bought a new battery and this time the engine light came on and now it just clicks AGAIN... I love my jeep but am getting very tired of this
