Exclamation 2007 sahara, stuck in gear! - auto (help!!)

Hi guys!
im new to this, but basically here is my problem.
Two days ago, i drove my jeep to the shops and on the way i pulled over. I put it in Park on the gear shifter, took my foot of the brake and it moved forward. I looked at the electronic readout on dash and it still said it was in drive!
I can move the shifter around like normal, and the button still appears to work, but it has no efffect on changing the gear!
When i got to the shops i turned the engine off, the car refused to start (presumably because it was still in drive)
We towed it home with our land rover, it did not start while being towed either.
Does anyone know what might have happened?
has this happened to someone before?
I dont mind taking it to a dealer, but if it is a quick fix i would love to know
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oli

Possibly a snapped shifter cable. Something similar happened to my '07 automatic.
Happened late on a Friday afternoon, out of town. A guy cutting his grass saw me stranded, came over and was able to get the trans into drive. By the time I got to a local dealer it was closed. Sat morning (we are visiting my mother-inlaw) they call to tell me they don't have the part in stock, and won't get it until Monday and jeep will be ready Tuesday. So I have to rent a car to get my wife home since she has to work Sun & Mon. That was $100 bucks and the repair was $300+. Haven't visitied my MIL since!

x2. The shifter cable probably came loose or snapped. There is a small plastic clip that holds the shifter cable in place, i don't who decided that, but it is susceptible to breaking and thus the cable because loose and you are stuck in whatever gear you were in when it happens. That would be my guess of what happened. The repair is not terribly hard but it requires removing a better part of the center console in order to get to the clip which is quite time consuming. Again this is just an idea, and it could be something else entirely. Good luck!

It is most likely the plastic connector at the end of the shifter cable. It probably just popped off of the shift lever. I used to have an 07 with auto trans and it did this all the time. Pop the top of the console by the shifter up and you can see it. It takes just a few seconds to do this. You can then pop the connector back on and your ready to go. Mine popped off so many times, I ended up rigging a zip tie around the connector and the shift mechanism to keep it on. It's a design flaw, but no major problem. Good luck.

Hi all!
My car is in service now, it turns out that it wasnt in fact the renowned plastic C clip! I Removed the console and it was all intact. I took it to the garage and it turned out it was in fact the connector on the other end of the cable that had degraded and come off! apparently this is rare, so if this happens to someone then it might be this too!
Also, i found out that if say you were stuck in park, youd be able to slip the connector on (wouldnt stay permenatly) to change into park if you were stranded somewhere!
The whole cable needs replacing and is costing about $200 so i guess it could be worse!
picking it up tomorrow thanks all
