2008 jeep wrangler starting problems help

Hey guys just recently purchased a 2008 jeep wrangler and the first problem is coming up about a month ago I jumped in it went to start it up nothing just clicked one time that's it all dash lights came on tried it again one click and no roll over finally on the third time started uP like everything was normal and started fine from there on out untill yesterday the same exact thing happend now it starts up fine can't understand what it is possibly the starter??? Any help guys thanks

My 2008 also has this problem. I took it into the dealership and they couldn't find or replicate the problem. It's very random when is does happen, but when it does I found that rocking the Jeep back and forth seems to fix the problem.

Thats odd. I wonder if rocking the OP's Jeep changes his. Would make it seem like some sort of position sensor on something?

I have a 2007 JK Auto it has happened atleast a dozen times, if I jiggle the shifter it starts right away. It has not occured in the last month ... pretty random. I checked & all the electrical connections & switches they seem o.k.

Next time it happens, put it into neutral and try. Bet it's the safety switch not detecting the shifter in 'park' all the time.

It happens to mine as well... Dealer couldn't re-create the problem and had no explination. Hasn't happened recently to verify it to be the shifter but Iam deffinitely gonna try messin with the hifter next time..

Did that in my 12, finally it wouldn't start, then was towed. they replaced my starter and all was good in the world again

The “click no start” problem is well documented and has been around for a long time. If you have an automatic, and when you try to start it you hear a click and the engine doesn’t start, try shifting to Neutral and see if it starts. If it does you have the “classic” symptoms.

The problem is that your Transmission Range Sensor (like a fancy Neutral Safety Switch) is acting up. There are three solutions:

1. No cost (usually works): When it happens, shift to Neutral and start it up.

2. Low cost (may fix it): Make a new really good ground from your battery, to the body, to the engine, and then to the transmission. This solution has worked for some.

3. High cost (seems to fix the problem): Get a new Transmission Range Sensor installed. The TRS is inside of your transmission and requires a bit of work to replace it.

I had this problem and brought it to the Dealership. The told me that they tried the ground fix and it worked for many but some retuned as it didn’t totally fix it. They said when they replaced the TRS it always worked. I have an extended warranty so they replaced the TRS for free and I haven’t seen the issue again.

OK, It happened again , finally!!!! Got in the Jeep and turned the key and nothin... just click, click. all lights were on but no start!! so I tried it.. I just jiggled the shifter & turned the key and YES!!! it started... good to know that it worked. Now to tell the deal sometime & see what they will do about it..

The infomous Jeep Flu. Affects all jeep models since the transmissions and ignitions got all fancy electrical gadgets. Good luck. Hopefully its just one sensor. Commanders have been plagued by similar issues which dealers have now snickered and called Jeep Flu because the problem acts like one sensor malfunction but turns out to be others such as temp sensors, theft lock issues from chipped key...etc

I'm having this same problem. I was thinking it may have something to do with the key, but my spare, which is just a plain key that's doesn't have the buttons did it to. I hope this solves our problem, because it not fun being stuck some were for 20 minutes or more till it decides to start.

Cool. N worked for me for a while and when that started to get intermittent I tried P to N to P to start it - anything to move the TRS. I've read where some never really fix it but just keep moving the shifter...

My old 08 (traded, but not cuz of problems) did that a few times. Unhook one of the leads off the battery and reconnect. The horn will honk once when battery is reconnected and the jeep always started right up after that. Seriously, worked every time for me and it's a simple fix, but it is a pain in the arse.

Yes. Unfortunately it's not an easy fix.

It's located inside the transmission under the valve body.

If he wants to try something a little more simple then he can try to run the good ground from the battery, to the body, to the engine, to the transmission. It may work - it has for some others.

I had the same problem. There seems to be two main reasons for the click-no-start issue (apart from a dying battery, that is). The first is a problem with the ignition key sensing module which can be affected by static discharge from the key. You can check this by waiting until the problem occurs, then pulling the IOD fuse, waiting 15 seconds and reinstalling. If this fixes the problem, you need a new CSM module (another clue that the CSM is at fault is if your remote-access door locks don't work when the engine won't start). This is a few hundred bucks.

If the CSM isn't at fault, the second main possible cause is with the transmission range sensor. If the condition is at all dependent on the position or if wiggling the auto shift lever while starting seems to help, then the TRS is erroneously locking out the ignition by signalling that the shift lever isn't in P or N, when it is. Fortunately fixing this usually doesn't require replacement of the sensor, which is an involved job. Rather the problem is with the sensor's ground, and as other have said you can install some redundant ground straps to solve the problem. Just take an 8 gauge or better wire from the engine block to the battery negative, and for good measure you can also run one to the alternator and to the transmission bell housing. When this is done, make sure to charge your battery. This seems to work for almost everyone.

After two weeks of a frustrating runaround (the dealer, bless its stupid heart, replaced the starter, a useless exercise), I stumbled upon the ground solution described on this and other forums. Problem has not recurred since.

Mine is a 2010 with 6 speed manual; started acting up a while back not starting intermittently-- today, it would not crank at all, gave it a pull and bumped clutch- it fired right up. Still will not crank under its own power.
Tried jumping solonoid while holding key in start position and it fires right up. I think it will be hauled to dealer on friday. Whatever the outcome; I think there will be an emergency starting system installed after this.

I have same issue in 2008, dealer said bad shifter cable, I say WTF? I think park sensor.

Ps, neutral ALWAYS WORKS FOR ME

If you are out of warrantee then that is the "free" method. If it starts to get intermittent you can try Park to Neutral then back to Park again - I had to do that a few times.

If you have the standard "click no start" problem then there aren't any codes thrown, and when it's not stuck it tends to fire right up, so it's hard to diagnose. I told my dealer about it and they said that based on my description they would just go ahead and replace the TRS (under warrantee), which fixed my problem.

Starting issues

I too am now a vitim of the Jeep flu. Intermitent starting. Mine is a 2008 auto wrangler. Usually takes 3 tries but when shifting out of park and back to park with the key on only does it once. Any new info on this? And if i do go to get the switch or sensor in the transmission replaced any ideas how much it'll cost?

I have replaced the Battery and starter and the failure to start still comes and go's, I get the click. I purchased the SNS from Napa but I am trying adding another ground cable from and negative Battery post to the Transmission housing, so far today my Wrangler starts first time every time. I will see if this has solved the start issue for the next week before trying to change the position switch in the Trans. From what I have read it looks like this requires draining the trans. fluid, removing the pan and valve body assembly to access the switch. I will post my results.

I can only repeat what I said last year - install the grounding straps before you tear apart your tranny. As an update, since doing this over a year ago I have had no return of the problem.

07. Had this issue for 3yrs now... Replaced battery... Sometimes it takes 4x's to turn over.. Wouldn't this indicate an alternator going bad?
