2009 X Hard Top with Soft top attached

So I read on this forum somewhere that it is not a good idea to have the soft top on underneath the hard top. At first glance, I thought the soft top was just rolled up in the back, so last night I was going to move it to gail a little cargo space in the back when I noticed it is attached and neatly rolled up and wrapped by the dealer. Is this the "best practice" for the soft tops? I plan on taking the hardtop completely off this weekend and checking the soft top for damage, but was wondering if I should take the soft top completely off when done???

Thanks in advance,

Yes, the soft top is only supposed to be in that position for transport and delivery. Only one top should be on at a time. Are you telling me that the soft top has been in that position since 2009?!?!?!

I don't know. This was a dealer owned vehicle as it only has 12k miles. They used it for parts deliveries and transporting people from dealer owned territory to territory. I called ,y salesman and he can't get me any additional info on how long it has been attached. He says that he thinks they put it on to ensure it wasn't damaged. He also assured me again that they can both be on simultaneously???

He's dead wrong. Show him the Owner's Manual.

This is from the 09 OM.

DUAL TOP — IF EQUIPPED
If your vehicle is equipped with a Dual Top,
you must
remove one of the tops from the vehicle. If the soft top
is removed, the pivot brackets must also be removed
from the sport bar.
The soft top was installed at the
factory for shipping purposes only.
The soft top and the
hard top are to be used independently.
Removal is
mandatory to prevent any possible wear and tear on the
soft top. Your vehicle warranty will not cover damage
resulting from both tops remaining on the vehicle at the

same time for extended periods of time.

My dealer told me this week I don't have to hurry as long as it is in the original factory wrap. I have 160 miles so far.

Right. Now read what I posted above.

Well this at least gives you an idea of what "extended period of time" in the manual refers to. Guess it must be longer then 3 years. One question I have is how does the hard top damage the soft top? Does not make any sense unless you actually try to install the hard top back over the soft top frame and accidently bend it.

The soft top seems in good shape. Bad part about it is its missing the side and rear windows as well as the door and top rails. =| Is it possible to just buy those parts or am I on the hook for the whole soft top?

My understanding is it's a vibration issue--the hard top pushes against some of the portions of the soft top that, in turn, are spread over the soft top frame.

As you drive the jeep, the soft top frame and the hard top vibrate and slowly wear away at the fabric. Practically, it probably works fine in low mileage situations, but, eventually you can have problems and it will likely not be viewed as a Chrysler warranty issue.

Dealers say all kinds of stupid things. Their job is to sell jeeps with as little effort and expense as possible, not to make sure your jeep is well taken care of.

A good rule of thumb is this: If something doesn't make sense, seems counterintuitive, or contradicts the manual or warranty booklet, and your only justification begins with "My dealer told me . . .," then it's probably wrong.

All dealer claims about maintenance, performance, specifications, etc. should be independently verified. The frequency we see folks posting wrong information from dealers on this forum is alarming.

So the dealer gave me all the parts for the soft top and it has been on this week. It is brand new and I am loving it!

When I went to pick up the parts the GM and the Sales Manager put it in for me and showed me the basics. Excellent service.

The GM even offered a free detail, but I declined. I told him "Not unless you are gonna throw some mud on it when you are done!". (we had just got back from muddin)

Thanks for all the replies and advice. No way I keep the soft top on with the hard top!!!

I had my soft and hard top on at the same time in my 01. Never had a problem. But, I'm not saying I would recommend it though....
