2010 Islander, what is "Performance Suspension"

Hi,

my second post here,
please bear with me and sorry for the long post but i'm on a mission to find my first jeep. i'm looking at 2010 models

what ive found a Sport S that has the following optional equipment,

sport s came back @ $20,510.00 (18% off list)
islander price came back @ $25,808.00 (10% off list)

my 3 question's (for now)are:
1 whats the Performance Suspension and what would it cost to add it to the sport s ?
2 how much would a hard top and the wiring harness cost
3 is there anything else other than red items above to make up the $1200.00 difference between the s and the islander?
4 whats the better tire, the ones on the s or the on's on the islander?

The Islanders were very limited production for 2010. Not every dealer got them and from what I understand, if they did, they got a 2 door and a 4 door only. Part of the suspension upgrade was Rubi shocks and springs. The seats and badge markings include the hood badge. Seats have the TIKI guy on the headrests, blue inserts on the seats, blue stitching on the steering wheel wrap. We have the TIKI guy spare tire cover too. Floor mats have Jeep tire tread pattern on them and tall sides to catch water/mud. The hard tops are not cheap, think they are around $2500. (don't quote me on that). Have not seen a used one for the Unlimited. Most likely the S model doesn't have the power window/ doors option. The TIKI stuff does no good for off-roading, but my wife loves her "little tiki dudes" riding shotgun. What it comes down to is being able to buy a Jeep that stands apart from every other Jeep when you drive it off the lot.

Yeah, the performance suspension is rubi shocks and springs. If you lift the jeep they would go away anyway. The hardtop though, goes for over $2000 and you may not be able to order it. They are in very short supply and are difficult to ship. the dual top option is worth the difference in price

If u ask your dealer if they have any "take off hard tops" where someone bought a jeep with the dual package but sold the hard top back to the dealer for a cheaper invoice. This is going to be the cheapest option. I was quoted at 1800 INSTALLED for one of these. If I didn't want the wiper or defroster to work they said they could sell it to me for 1500. This is a pretty good deal. They can't sell it as new because it was previously installed but it wasn't really used so you would get a new top for cheaper

That price on the sport is good. I bought a 2010 sport for 21800 and that was about the going price in my area. It's the basic package but that's what me ad alot of people wanted because your not wasting money on useless power stuff, navigation and painted fender flares and saving literally 5000+ dollars. Take the cheapest sport you can find and make it your own if that's what you really want. Unless you have a rubicon package there basically all the same off road other than gearing and tires. The tires you can easily upgrade and the gearing is not crucial unless you are doing serious crawling If you plan on going wheeling often just get a rubi and be done with it. The rest is "luxury" trim and stuff.

heres question 4,

are the seats in the islander the same as the seats in the sport being different only in color and the logo or are they a better quality in comfort and build?

if i could get the islander priced down to say $24,500.00 what would be the better buy the S at $20,500.00 or the islander?

i live in Montana.

Now that I see Montana I see the reason for the cheaper prices. I am not really familiar with the islander but if you have the 32" a/t tires and some nicer interior and the shocks and stuff I would say go for it. I like the decals of the islander. Kinda funny with that in your part of the country I would imagine.

they both have 32" tires, the sport is an "S" (preferred package 23S) and comes with P225/75R17 OWL.
the other sweet part here is that theres also no sales tax here in Montana but the sport is 350 miles from home and the Islander is 250 miles away.

another wrench to my decision making process is that theres also a Sahara 300 miles away that has a MSRP $29385.00, or $800.00 more than the Islander and can be had for the same price as the islander.

you have picked the same package I intended to buy on a Sport S 4 door. After way too long dickering & driving everybody nuts I ran across a perfect 2 year old with 15000 miles on it for such a spectacular price it must have been waiting for *just*me* to come along.

Having just bought a like-new Sahara I'm partial already to some of those 'frills' I designated at being not interested in a few months ago.

Mine came with a '24G' package I hadn't identified before. There is 'SDUS Heavy Duty Suspension w/Gas Shocks', front & rear stabilizer bars, and 18" wheels I didn't see on the 24S package I thought I was going to buy. It does ride really well for me.

The colored fenders remain the only option it has that I haven't grown fond of yet. Glad I got both tops although probably will never use the soft top.

I don't know anyone who actually speaks highly of the navigation unit. Nor do I care for the little special decals & embroidery on the seats.

Given heavy rain, sleet, snow & temp of below freezing since I purchased, I can barely wait to get at least ONE of the top pieces off and go for a drive about.

Whatever you get, will be more fun than what you've already got regardless of which you choose.

If you're not going lift it, the suspension and the hardtop justify the price difference.

On top of that, you'll quickly appreciate the uniqueness of your special edition. I've only seen one islander in the five months I've had my Jeep.

If you don't plan to upgrade suspension anytime soon, the upgraded shocks and springs make quite a difference in ride from the sport. Also, the islander has the same BFG mt's as the rubi

By the way, as to your original question, "Performance Suspension"=Gas (rather than hydraulic) shocks as well as stiffer coil springs on the front and rear. It's a real improvement, not a made up name.

Nobody ever seems sure of this. I don't believe mine did--my window sticker makes no mention of it and I don't think Chrysler's in the habit of giving "freebies."

However, I just saw in another post that somebody found a "Rubicon take off" suspension (which would be the performance suspension) and it was using the same coil springs I have.

I don't know if I've got the gas shocks or not. Probably not, but I don't know how the look of the two types of stock shocks differ, so I haven't really tried to get under my Jeep to look. I've just assumed the answer is "no."

If my memory serves correctly, both Islander and Mountain have the Rubi suspension...just not the drive components.

Look under a a new Sport, Sahara and Rubi. The Rubi will have RED shocks (Heavy Duty). The others will not.

What color are the shocks on the Mountain and Islander? If RED, then you have your answer.

To clarify a Mountain Edition stereotype . . . .

Yes, a Mountain package adds $4k to the cost of the underlying Sport. However, people are often unaware that this includes a lot of commonly added upgrades like power windows, power locks, side steps, upgraded wheels, Rubi tires, etc.

If you would have added these features to your Sport anyway, then the Mountain package really only adds about $1000 to the cost of the Jeep. That extra $1000 gets you the items typically associated with the Mountain Edition, such as different seat covers, the hood decals, a grey grille, a black gas cap cover, tail light guards, slush mats, etc.

I only mention this because I often hear that Mountain and Islander owners paid $4000 "for stickers," or that for "almost the same amount" they could have bought a similarly equipped Rubi. Neither of these claims is correct.

The BFG tires are almost certainly the MT's, like the Rubicon. Far superior to the on/off road tire that come standard on the Sport. Our 2009 X came with the on/off road tires and we paid the dealer $500 to swap them out for the MT's. If you intend to use your JK offroad the tire choice is obvious MT. If you will be mostly on pavement then the other tires will be a bit quieter.

BTW, the tubular side step on the Islander are fairly useless and possibly a detriment offroad. They do collect mud right handily though.

the performance suspension was part of the Customer Preferred Package 23Y package from the factory here,

I'd of course be pleased if I do in fact have the performance suspension. Odd though that this wasn't put front and center by Jeep at least for the mountain--for example, it's not shown on my window sticker. I have my doubts.

In any event, the Sahara definitely does NOT come with it standard. If the price is close, I'm not sure why you'd go with the Sahara. Sahara's are great of course, but the suspension and hardtop alone would make the islander worthwhile under your circumstances.
