2010 JK steering issue. Two part question

We took a trail ride last weekend. Nothing severe just some trails through the woods with a few hills to climb. The wife took the JK, me the TJ, several other jeeps came along, most of them stock. After about an hour of riding the wife tells me the steering wheel is popping. I check it out and yes it does pop when moved from side to side. We ride some more and it gets worse. I decided to get some of the other jeep guys to check it out since they were more experienced. Raised the hood, and I grabbed the steering linking and you could rotate it in a 2 inch circle right at the knuckle universal joint. Come to find out some sort of bushing that goes through the firewall had slid all the way out against the knuckle. Took a little tapping to get it back in but after that the popping stopped.

My question is, is this normal or is this a major problem, my thoughts are if it is slid all the way down and you hit a pot hole in the road at 55 mph, the whole steering could break.

Second question. She was in 4 high for most of the day. Everytime she backed up and manuerved around trees, the front hubs popped like crap. All the other Jeepers said that is not normal. Although I am new to jeeping, I have owned a 4 wheel drive since I was 16. I have never heard this crap before and none of the other Jeeps were doing it. We finally told her that when she was manuvering around on flat ground do it in 2 wheel drive.

I am taking it in to the dealer Thursday and I would like to be a little more educated on what to say. I know these issues are not right, but I just wanted to know if any of you had been through this.

The front hubs popping is one thing, but that steering worries me.

I would definitely have the steering thing checked out by the dealer. Sounds to me like a warranty repair.

Regarding the "hubs popping like crap" in your post, I'm guessing that you are experiencing the effects of the limited slip differentials. Mine does the same thing. The steering gets tough also and she seems to "dig in" on soft material. I typically spend most of my time in 2 high on the trail. When in 4 high or low and off road, I turn off the ESP feature. That seems to help. Especially in 4 low.

you need that steering looked at. is it the drag link that came loose? if so, that will indeed clunk around, appearing it's the hubs making a racket. youll feel this in the steering wheel too. the steering wheel wont be centered to drive straight, and ESP activation will be goofy, activating the brake system, making noise. it's pretty tough to get hubs on these to make any noise. the suspension setup is nearly identical to a TJ.

now if it's the steering shaft bushing coming loose that's another story. there's one in the gear box, and in the firewall. generally this gets a new steering shaft above the universal.

like jk'n mentioned, ALWAYS shut of the ESP in 4wd by pressing and holding the ESP OFF button while in 4hi for approximately 5-10 seconds. it makes life alot better.

Have the Dealer check your Steering Box and Intermediate Steering Shaft. I've already had my IS-Shaft replaced.

Best of Luck!

Cheers!

Yes it was the bushing that goes through the firewall. The local dealer I took it to had several of there mechanics look at it and said they had never had one come in that did that.

They checked the popping in the front end and said that wasn't normal. I left it this morning and checked on it around 3. They had just then started looking at it, I gotta check back in the morning.

Dang, 3600 miles on her, 3580 on pavement and 20 on easy trails. All this allready

I had my transfer case linkage come off in bad terrain. So bad that the tow truck guy from chrysler roadside assistance laughed at me when he checked me out for a tow. Turned out to be a 60 cent part. I temporarily connected it long enough to shift it into 2wd and drove it to the dealer. Things are going to happen, just be happy that you weren't out in the middle of nowhere. Took me 45 minutes at least to walk out from where I was. Could have been worse for sure.

Jeeps get better with age. once you get the kinks out and a few things replaced they rock...till they get 7+ years old. then the fun really starts

Some folks on the forum claim I should have been more girly-man on the TC shifter but I didn't think I man-handled it that much to break the little bushing. Since I did it, I got 3 spares to put in the glove box. From the looks of them they seem like the type of plastic that just gets brittle over time and then goes snap. If I produce one of those on a jeep run off road for a stuck jeeper, someone is going to want to kiss my...ahem. They are in all JKs from 07 to present.
