2010 Wrangler Transmission Skid Plate Recall

So, evidently right around 5/21/12 (sorry I'm not exactly Mr. Currentaffairs) Jeep issued a recall for nearly 68,000 Jeeps with automatic transmission for a new transmission skid plate. I've been to the dealership a couple times since then and they are just now mentioning this little safety hazard to me. That kind of makes me worry that I should be cautious with those guys...
I am pretty new to the Jeep world, and never had to get anything recalled. I guess the plan is to swap the old plate out with some new skid bar kind of design, anyone have any experience with this recall?
Thanks!

Yes. I got this recall. I'm not taking my Jeep in for them to take metal off/ take off my protection for my transmission just because their dumb catalytic converters run super hot.

This is just a band aid to the real issue.

After you off road, you need to make dam sure that you hose off that skid plate and clean off all debris. It's a match waiting to be lit they say.

This. 7 or 8 documented JK's (2010) did catch fire from the cat heating up debris that was jammed in there. If the debris was properly cleaned, like it should have been, no issues. Chrysler is trying to protect us from ourselves because of a few dumb a**es. They have no choice. Decide what suites you best, a skid plate or skid "bar" they're going to replace it with.

My point exactly. Make sure you clean your skid plate after you off road.

The dealer isn't touching my skid plate.

It's not a bad idea if you're mall crawling to have it taken off because you won't be using it anyway.

You never know when one of those high curbs will sneak up on you.

The dealer will not be touching mine either. I am a big boy, I can lay down in some dirt to check if there is a dead plant trapped underneath.

^^

Funny Story. I've hit a decent sized curb in one of those mountainish cities after a long day of wheeling. My JK was still stock and if it wasn't for my skid plates I'd be dead in the water.

did the curb ambush you or were you out for one last crawl before heading home?

Sorry guys, this may seem like a silly question, but can I basically tell the dealer thanks but no thanks, I'll keep my skid plate. Then will I have to deal with the recall every time I take the Jeep to the dealership for something?

What exactly is this skid bar they plan on putting in! Will it be better or worse than skid plate. I got a reall in the mail today.

The piece of plate they want to put in is nothing more then a square bracket that goes from one side of your frame to the other. If you were to go off roading, it would act as a "Jeep Catch" more than anything. I guarantee that. It's not going to provide protection.

The new jeeps come with this instead of a skid plate.

Zwet, you shouldn't ever have to go back to the dealer for anything unless it's a warranty issue.

If you do have to go back to the dealer you should have an option or you should make it clear that you want your old skid plate back and have them put it in your jeep. That way you can just put it back on, it's 3 bolts, when you get home.

Okay. I agree I figured that a bar verses a plate wouldn't compare. I'll keep to my skid plate

Is the factory skid plate any good to begin with?

Got my recall notice too. Why is the 2010 only affected? and if the catalytic converter is the problem then why not move it and leave the skid plate alone?

Their solution is probably cheaper.

I'd also look into a transmission cooler. There's been plenty of JKs burning up because of the transmission (slushbox) overheating, and the fluid overflows out of the dipstick or breather tube. The exhaust is conveniently routed under both. IIRC the fuel line is close too.

Info On Recall

So.. I am new here , hello all!

Went to dealer because i rec'd the recall letter too. turns out you have no option but to accept the piece of trash flimsy "bar" they want to replace your honest to goodness skid plate with, because a couple of yuppy morons collected a landfill under their transmission. you cant refuse it or you void your warranty.. my advice is to call and complain about this as i did.. 1-800-853-7406 is the telephone number for this recall, and the recall is for affected 2010 wranglers M22 skid plate recall.

When i called, get this.. (07/23/2012) i was the "only one who expressed disgust" in the fact they were going to remove a key piece of protective equipment from my jeep and replace it with a banana. they are arrogant, know better than you types, and be prepared. i wont let my jeep within 1000 feet of a dealer who is going to touch my jeep and put this trashy toilet paper roll transmission protector near it... I suggest others who get the notice call and complain as well. Chrysler is AGAIN pushing a bandaid on us because a handful of idiots collected a dumpster under their transmission... time to SPEAK UP! and tell them to keep hands OFF! I did...

Thanks Guys, be sure to hear from me often now that i registered!

Ride On!

Any got pics yet...

I'll call the Dealer tomorrow. I have a free oil change coming and I have the Oxygen sensor recall still on my todo list. I just dont want the crappy bar to replace the nice skid plate...

I'll be asking about skipping that particular little perk they wanna add.

I'll report back after.

See that bar next to the exhaust that is what it will be replaced with. It is like the 2011 models or late 2010s.

This is not mine, I will be keeping my skid plate or at least let them replace it and tell them to put my skid plate it the trunk so I can swap it back out when I get home.
