2011-2012

About to buy a 2011 (Unlimited Rubicon) for about 28K if I get my way. Is the motor issue (new motor in 2012) that big a deal that I should wait a while and find a 2012? Budget is an issue. Off Road Hard core very very little.

I got a 2011 jkur. They're great. Run 5w30 or 10w30 instead o the water 5w20 though.
Otherwise it's great with the low gearing.

On road, yes, you will see the difference. Off-road, not so much. You should test drive both before you decide.

Why do you need a Rubi? Just as a note, I bought my '12 JKU 3.73(1 yr ago) Sport new for 28.5K.

Is it a 6 speed or auto? If it is a six speed there is not much of a difference with the new motor. But it is daylight and dark with the auto.

^^this. Same NSG-370 6speed since 2004, but the new auto is great. The old auto isn't that bad after a regear I've heard

I just purchased a 2012 JK after a couple of months of searching for the right deal. I test drove both manuals and autos with both motors. IMO you will want the 3.6 if you do most of your driving around town. However finding a deal on the 3.6 is more difficult. They definitely sell for a premium.

I used to have an 08 and recently drove a 2013 JKU and it was night and day. The new engine had quite a bit more power. If you can swing it, get the newer one. Just my opinion tho.

Couple of questions.
#1 - Stick or auto...this is HUGE. If it is an auto, I would pass on a pre 2012. Luckily, a Rubi would have 4.10's, which would help...but still..it is a heavier 4 door.

#2 - Is this a DD (Daily Driver) or a 3rd/fun vehicle? Will you do any mods, even for just looks (like larger wheels?)

#3 - How will you use it? I see you mentioned that you will not do a lot of hard care off-roading. Would you be better served in a 2012 or 2013 Sport S 4 door with limited slip? Do you need lockers?
